Rolena Adorno, the Sterling Professor of Spanish and chair of the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, has been selected to receive the Lifetime Scholarly Achievement Award from the Modern Language Association. She will receive the honor at the association’s annual meeting this coming January in Vancouver, British Columbia.
In announcing the award the Modern Language Association stated that Professor Adorno is widely credited with “redefining and revitalizing the field of Latin American colonial studies, which she has examined in its fundamental relationship to Spanish peninsular literature of the 16th and 17th centuries (the ‘Golden Age’ of Spanish literature) and in its foundational role in the development of the modern Latin American literary tradition.”
Among Professor Adorno’s books are The Polemics of Possession in Spanish American Narrative (Yale University Press, 2008). She joined the faculty at Yale University in 1996 after teaching at Syracuse University, Ohio State University, Princeton University, and the University of Michigan.
Professor Adorno is a graduate of the University of Iowa. She earned a Ph.D. at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
