Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Washington State University in Pullman received a three-year, $300,000 grant from the Office on Violence Against Women of the U.S. Department of Justice. The grant will be used to support programs to prevent sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking on campus.
The University of Pennsylvania received a five-year, $3.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute for a study to develop optional prevention and therapeutic strategies for women with HIV/AIDS and the human papillomavirus in the African nation of Botswana. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania will collaborate with scholars at the University of Botswana on the project.
The University of California, San Diego, received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to fund education, prevention, and victim services at the university’s Sexual Assault & Violence Prevention Resource Center.
The University of Minnesota received a grant from the Tawani Foundation to document the historic and contemporary experiences of transgender individuals in the Upper Midwest. The oral history project will be housed in the Jean-Nickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies at the University of Minnesota Libraries. “This is an important project primarily because we want to make sure that transgender experiences are represented, recognized, and preserved for current and future generations,” said Lisa Vecoli, curator of the Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies. “These voices are missing and who better to share that experience and tell that story than the people who lived it.”
Scripps College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in Claremont, California, received an anonymous $10 million donation to help finance the construction of a new residence hall on campus. The donation will cover approximately half the cost of the new construction. The new residence hall will house more than 100 students.
