Rutgers University Scholar Wins National Book Award

Ruth Feldstein, an associate professor of history at the Newark, New Jersey, campus of Rutgers University, has been selected to receive the National Book Award for 2013 from the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis. Dr. Feldstein is being honored for her book How It Feels to be Free: Black Women Entertainers and the Civil Rights Movement (Oxford University Press, 2013).

Professor Feldstein is also the author of Motherhood in Black and White: Race and Sex in American Liberalism, 1930-1965 (Cornell University Press, 2000). She holds a Ph.D. in history from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
