History Making Productions has released its first documentary in a series on The Women of Philadelphia. The series aims to inspire collective action and civic pride by revealing how women significantly shaped the city Philadelphia.
Lucretia Coffin Mott, a founder of Swarthmore College known for her anti-slavery and equal rights work, serves as the first subject of the documentary series. Mott was born on the island of Nantucket in Massachusetts in 1793. She attended Nine Partners, a Quaker boarding school located in Millbrook, New York, where she later taught and became an abolitionist and women’s rights activist. In 1848, she was one of the organizers of the First Women’s Rights Convention. In 1964, Mott and several other Quakers founded Swarthmore College, which today is one of the nation’s highest-rated liberal arts colleges. In 1866, Mott became the first president of the American Equal Rights Association, an organization formed to achieve equality for African Americans and women. She died in 1880.
