The New Leader of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania

Rebecca Chopp, who has served as president of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania since 2009, announced earlier this month that she has accepted the position of chancellor of the University of Denver. (See WIAReport story here.) The board of trustees of Swarthmore College was quick to appoint Constance Cain Hungerford as interim president of the college. She will assume the role of president on July 14.

Dr. Hungerford is the Mari S. Michener Professor of Art History at the college and her research focuses on 19th-century French painting. She has been on the Swarthmore College faculty since 1975. From 2001 to 2011, Dr. Hungerford served as provost at Swarthmore.

Dr. Hungerford is a graduate of Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
