The First Woman President of the University of Maine

Susan J. Hunter was named the next president of the University of Maine in Orono. When she takes office on July 7, she will be the first woman to serve as president in the university’s 149-year history. The Orono campus, just north of Bangor, enrolls about 11,000 students. Women make up 48 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Since September 2013, Dr. Hunter has served as vice chancellor for academic affairs for the seven campuses of the University of Maine System. From 2008 to 2013, she was executive vice president for academic affairs at the Orono campus. Dr. Hunter joined the full-time faculty at the University of Maine in 1991.

Dr. Hunter is a graduate of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where she majored in biology. She holds a Ph.D. in physiology from Pennsylvania State University.
