Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

A team of scientists at the University of Alabama at Birmingham‘s Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health and the Center for Research in Women’s Health have been awarded over seven years of funding from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to test whether a widely available drug (Bromocriptine) can save the lives of mothers with peripartum cardiomyopathy, a rare life-threatening form of heart failure that develops toward the end of pregnancy or within the first five months postpartum. The condition is a leading contributor to late postpartum maternal death in the U.S. and globally. The newly funded project at UAB will launch in 15 countries at more than 15 sites and three partner institutions around the world.

Loneke Blackman Carr, assistant professor in the department of nutritional sciences at the University of Connecticut, received a new grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to study the effects of a weight-gain prevention program on Black women’s health. The project aims to more holistically address Black women’s lived experiences and support healthier choices that promote weight stability.

A team of clinical scientists at Michigan State University and Texas A&M University were awarded a $3.7 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to assess the impact of testosterone on binge eating risk in women. With the new funds, the team will examine testosterone both on its own and in combination with estradiol and progesterone, allowing the researchers to develop a more comprehensive understanding of how gonadal hormones may work together to influence binge eating risk.
