Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

A team from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, in partnership with the Soter Women’s Health Research Program, received a $3.06 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to study how menopause affects the mental and physical health of women veterans, a population that experiences higher rates of early menopause. The research project will focus on the interactions between hormones, stress, brain function, and gut bacteria.

California State University, Northridge received an award from the John Randolph Hayes and Dora Hayes Foundation to digitize a collection of photographs taken by Vera Jackson, the only woman who worked in the 1940s as a staff photographer for The California Eagle — the oldest Black newspaper in Los Angeles. The funds will allow archivists at the university’s Tom & Ethel Bradley Center to digitize, research, and create metadata for 2,550 items, including photographs, film reels, and personal and professional papers.

St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota, received a $400,000 grant from the Educating Character Initiative, a project of the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. The grant will support the integration of character education into undergraduate curricula, focusing on the virtues students need to become ethical social justice leaders. Faculty will work to embed virtue studies into courses and deepen experiential learning, particularly in the women’s college’s sophomore Global Search for Justice seminars.
