Elon University’s Hwayeon Ryu Honored for Distinguished Teaching in Mathematics

Hwayeon Ryu, associate professor of mathematics at Elon University in North Carolina, has received the Henry L. Adler Award for Distinguished Teaching from the Mathematical Association of America. One of the organization’s highest honors, the award recognizes excellence in undergraduate mathematics education, mentorship, and research.

After three years teaching at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, Dr. Ryu joined the Elon faculty in 2019. She was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2024. Dr. Ryu teaches a wide range of undergraduate mathematics courses and creates opportunities for students to participate in research and interdisciplinary projects that connect mathematics with biology. Throughout her career, she has mentored nearly 40 undergraduate researchers. In her own research, Dr. Ryu focuses on mathematical modeling and analysis of immune response to viral infection at the cellular level.

Dr. Ryu earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Korea University. During her undergraduate education, she participated in a study abroad program at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Ryu went on to receive a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
