Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Amelie G. Ramirez, a professor and cancer researcher at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, was awarded a $400,000 grant from Susan G. Komen, an organization dedicated to reducing breast cancer mortality through research, community health outreach, and public policy initiatives. Dr. Ramirez’s project will study how therapeutic yoga can impact health-related quality of life, fatigue, and physical function among cancer survivors.
Texas Woman’s University received a $1 million donation from the JF Maddox Foundation to establish an endowment in honor of alumna Mabel Scofield Maddox, who graduated from the university in 1926 with a bachelor’s degree in literature. Beginning in 2027, the new endowment will be used to support student scholarships, with preference given to first-generation students who demonstrate financial need and to those who pursue degrees in fields related to science, technology, engineering, arts, English literature and language, mathematics, nursing, or health sciences.
The 1976 alumnae class of Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, recently raised $258,334 to fund a new study abroad endowment at the women’s college. According to Jean Gambrill, director of the Meredith Fund, the new endowment will help “students in gaining unique global experiences, building confidence as travelers, and enriching their college journey through study abroad opportunities offered by the Office of International Programs.”
