A Pair of Women Selected to Lead Community Colleges in New England

Susan Rogers has been named president of Central Maine Community College. According to the most recent data from the U.S. Department of Education, the college enrolls more than 4,700 students, 56 percent of whom are women. Dr. Rogers is slated to begin her presidency on August 10.

Since 2022, Dr. Rogers has been chief of staff and vice president for institutional effectiveness at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She also previously served as the community college’s interim vice president of instruction and learning. Prior to joining Dutchess Community College, Dr. Rogers was a faculty member and chair of the division of social sciences, sustainability, and entrepreneurship at the State University of New York at Sullivan.

“I am honored to join Central Maine Community College and the Maine Community College System at such an exciting time,” said Dr. Rogers. “Community colleges create opportunity by design, and CMCC already has strong programs, strong partnerships, and a deep commitment to students. I look forward to working with faculty, staff, students, employers, and community partners to build on that foundation and expand opportunity for the people and communities we serve.”

Dr. Rogers is a graduate of the State University of New York at New Paltz, where she majored in psychology. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees in educational psychology and methodology from the University at Albany.

Hara D. Charlier is the new president of Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The college enrolls nearly 1,700 students, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Women represent more than two-thirds of the student body.

Dr. Charlier has served as president of Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Minnesota, for the past 10 years. Throughout her presidency, the college experienced significant growth in enrollment, modernized its facilities, and launched more than 20 new academic programs. As a former faculty member, Dr. Charlier taught courses in anatomy, microbiology, and biology.

“As I make the transition from rural Minnesota to BCC and the amazing Berkshires community, I could not be more excited to begin this next chapter,” said Dr. Charlier. “As soon as I learned about the mission of BCC, which focuses on access for all, I knew this was the place for me. I look forward to getting to know the faculty, the staff, and most importantly, the students who make BCC the special place it is.”

Dr. Charlier received her bachelor’s degree in animal science from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She holds a master’s degree in microbiology from Miami University in Ohio and a Ph.D. in community college leadership from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
