The Status of Women Professionals in Intercollegiate Sports

Vivian Acosta and Linda Jean Carpenter, professors emerita at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, have released the latest in their series of reports on the status of women in intercollegiate athletics. The study has been funded in recent years by the Project on Women and Social Change at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Among the findings in the report are:

* There are 13,963 women professionals employed in intercollegiate sports positions. These include coaches, administrators, trainers, sport information directors etc. This is the largest number in the 37-year history of the Acosta/Carpenter study.

* There are now 9,581 women’s intercollegiate sports team in the nation. This is an increase of 2,080 teams from 2000.

* Women make up 22.3 percent of all athletics directors at U.S. colleges and universities.

* Women are 32.4 percent of all head athletic trainers at colleges and universities.

* Slightly more than 12 percent of all sports information directors are women.

* In 1972, 9 out of 10 head coaches for women’s teams were females. In 2014, 4 out 10 head coaches for women’s teams are females. Women are 3 percent of the head coaches for men’s teams.
