American Sociological Association to Honor Boston College’s Juliet Schor

schorJuliet Schor, professor of sociology at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, has been named the winner of the 2014 Public Understanding of Sociology Award from the American Sociological Association. The award is presented to individuals who have advanced the understanding of sociology and sociological research among the general public. She will receive the award at the association’s annual meeting this summer.

Professor Schor is the author of several books including Plenitude: The New Economics of True Wealth (Penguin Press, 2010), Born to Buy: The Commercialized Child and the New Consumer Culture (Scriber, 2004), The Overspent American: Why We Want What We Don’t Need (Basic Books, 1998) and The Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of Leisure (Basic Books, 1992).

Professor Schor is a magna cum laude graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
