Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, received a five-year, $550,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for programs to increase the number of women in academic careers in STEM disciplines. “Women represent more than half of the population, more than half of those enrolled in higher education, and nearly half of the workforce, yet they are persistently underrepresented in STEM fields,” said Nariman Farvardin, president of Stevens. “Unless we as a society do everything we can to harness the talent of women – as well as others who are underrepresented in the technical fields – we are under utilizing resources sorely needed to solve the complex challenges the U.S. faces in the 21st century.”
West Virginia University received a four-year, $644,519 grant from the U.S. Department of Education for programs to provide childcare for students who are parents while they attend classes or for other academic activities during nontraditional hours.
