Women Are a Large Part of the Teacher Workforce, But Men Are Often Their Bosses

department_of_educationNew data from the U.S. Department of Education shows that women make up 76.1 percent of all teachers in the nation’s K-12 public schools. Women are 89.3 percent of the teachers in elementary schools, 72.6 percent of the teachers in middle schools, and 58.3 percent of the faculty at the nation’s high schools.

While women dominate the nation’s teacher’s workforce, their bosses are far more likely to be men. Women make up a slight majority of all school principals in the United States. Women are 63.8 percent of the elementary school principals. But men are 57.7 percent of the principals at middle schools and 69.9 percent of the high school principals.

Of schools with 1,000 or more students, men are 65.9 percent of all principals.
