Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
The University of Rochester received a $150,000 grant from the LAM Foundation for a study of lymphangioleiomyomatosis. The disease, commonly known as LAM, primarily affects women. Tumor-like masses and cysts form in the lungs and at times transplants become necessary.
Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, received a $718,770 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health for a study on postpartum depression. The research will be under the direction of Abbie E. Goldberg, associate professor of psychology at Clark University.
Dr. Goldberg is a graduate of Wesleyan University in MIddletown, Connecticut. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Goldberg joined the Clark University faculty in 2005.
Smith College, the highly rated liberal arts institution for women in Northampton, Massachusetts, received a $5 million gift from alumna and former trustee, Phoebe Reese Lewis. The money will fund a new academic center on campus that will be named the Phoebe and John D. Lewis Global Studies Center.
