A Check-Up on Women Faculty at U.S. Medical Schools

woman_dr_in_scrubsThe Association of American Medical College reports that in 2011 there were 137,357 people who were listed as members of the faculty at U.S. medical schools. A large number of these faculty members are practicing physicians who are affiliated with teaching hospitals. Of the 137,357 medical school faculty members in 2011, 49,706, or 36.2 percent were women.

Women are making some progress. Five years earlier, women made up 34.5 percent of all medical school faculty.

Women now make up a majority of all Black medical school faculty members. In contrast, women are less than a third of all White medical school faculty.

In 2011, there were 6,369 women who served as full professors at U.S. medical schools. They made up 19.6 percent of all full professors.
