In Memoriam: Dorothy Truex, 1915-2013

dorothy_truex2Dorothy Truex, vice chancellor emerita of student affairs at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has died at the age of 97.

After a 27-year career at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Truex joined the administration at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1974. At the time she was the highest ranking women administrator at a college or university in Arkansas. She retired in 1985. Throughout her career she was an advocate for increasing educational opportunities for women and minorities. She served as president of the National Association for Women Deans and Counselors and was a national adviser to the Intercollegiate Association of Women Students. She was a co-founder and the first president of the Arkansas Council of Women in Higher Education.

Dr. Truex was a graduate of William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. She held a master’s degree in educational guidance and counseling from the University of Missouri and a doctorate in student personnel administration from Columbia University.

  1. I have such fond memories of Dr. Truex. I was at OU from 1966 – 1070. I came back in 1971 at the encouragement of Dr Truiex to be part of a new graduate program, Student Personnel Services. She was always supportive and encouraging.
    I was active on campus and she was a wonderful role model for me. I have been thinking a lot about that time at OU and found this info on her passing. RIP Dr. Truex.
