Janet Rowley of the University of Chicago Shares the $500,000 Albany Medical Center Prize

rowleyJanet D. Rowley, the Blum Riese Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine, Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology and Human Genetics at the University of Chicago, is sharing the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research with Peter Nowell of the University of Pennsylvania and Brian Druker of the Oregon Health and Science University. The trio is being honored for their work on combating cancer. The award, which comes with a prize of $500,000, will be awarded in May.

Dr. Rowley’s research focuses on analyzing the genetic consequences of the recurring chromosome abnormalities seen in human leukemia cells. She has been awarded the National Medal of Science and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Professor Rowley holds two bachelor’s degrees and a medical degree, all from the University of Chicago.

Update: Professor Rowley died on December 17, 2013.
