University of Wisconsin Study Finds Increasing Premature Mortality Rates for Women in Rural Areas

uw-logo_all-color_vertGenerally, due to advances in medicine and healthcare, the average life expectancy of men and women in the United States has continued to increase. But a new study by researchers at the University of Wisconsin has found the rate of premature mortality among women in some rural areas has increased in recent years.

The study examined mortality rates in 3,140 counties nationwide. The data showed that the premature mortality rate, women who die before the age of 75, has increased in 1,316 counties from 1992 to 2006. Most of the counties with the largest increases in mortality rates were in the rural South and West.
