A Check-Up on Women in U.S. Medical Education

Nurse taking sick patient’s temperature with thermometer in doctThe Association of American Medical Colleges reports that in 2011 women were 47.3 percent of all applicants to U.S. medical schools. While the number of women applying to medical school is at an all-time high, the percentage of women among the applicant pool has decreased in recent years. In 2003 and 2004 women were a majority of all applicants.

The number of women accepted to medical school was also at an all-time high in 2011. A total of 9,495 women were accepted to medical school in 2011. They were 47.1 percent of all students accepted and 47 percent of all matriculants at medical schools.

In 2011, a record 8,397 women graduated from U.S. medical schools. Women were 48.4 percent of all medical school graduates.
