Honors and Awards for Six Women Scholars

mclaughlin-setVirginia McLaughlin, dean of the School of Education at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, has been selected to received the Edward C. Pomeroy Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. The award recognizes “outstanding contributions to teacher education, either through distinguished service to the teacher education community or through the development and promotion of outstanding practices in teacher education at the collegiate, state or national level.”

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College of William nd Mary, Dr. McLaughlin earned her master’s degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and her doctorate from the University of Memphis. She will be stepping down as dean at the end of this academic year after serving in that role since 1995. She plans to take a sabbatical and the return to the William and Mary faculty in 2014.

BrisonNatasha-230x322Natasha Brison, a doctoral student in the College of Education at the University of Georgia, received the 2013 Maloy Student Research Award from the Sport and Recreation Law Association. She will receive the award at the organization’s annual meeting in Denver on March 14.

Brison is a clinical assistant professor in the department of kinesiology and health at Georgia State University. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law.

sanchezJournalist and blogger Yoani Sanchez of Cuba will be presented with the Medallion of Courage from the Cuban Research Institute of Florida International University in Miami. Sanchez will receive the award on April 1.

The award is given to “recognize individuals who pursue or defend a noble cause at a personal cost.”

Scripps professor of geophysics Cathy ConstableCathy Constable, professor of geophysics at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego, has been chosen as a recipient of the Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn, Germany. The award comes with a prize of approximately $75,000.

Professor Constable is a graduate of the University of Western Australia. She holds a master’s degree from the Australian National University and a Ph.D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Leigh McCue-WeilLeigh McCue-Weil, associate professor in the department of aerospace and ocean engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, received the Rosenblatt Young Naval Engineer Award from the American Society of Naval Engineers.

Dr. McCue-Weil is a graduate of Princeton University. She holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of Michigan.

lee_thompson_picture-214x300Lee Thompson, professor of chair of the department of psychological sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, is the winner of the McGraw-Hill Excellence in Teaching First-Year Seminars Award. She received the award at the Conference on the First-Year Experience in Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Thompson is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
