In Memoriam: Barbara Reeves, 1944-2024

Barbara Reeves, longtime instructor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, passed away on January 22, 2024. She was 79 years old.

From 1993 to 2019, Dr. Reeves was a faculty member in Virginia Tech’s College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and the Department of Religion and Culture, where she taught both graduate and undergraduate students. Her courses focused on science and technology in society, religion and science, and the humanities. During this time, she received a teaching grant from the Center for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching to develop an earth sustainability curriculum. Prior to her tenure with Virginia Tech, Dr. Reeves held academic appointments with Cornell University, Ohio State University, and Harvard University.

Dr. Reeves received her bachelor’s degree in physics from Smith College, a women’s college in Northampton, Massachusetts. She earned a master’s degree in teaching, a second master’s degree in history of science, and a Ph.D. in history of science from Harvard University.
