Harvard Names Two Women to Endowed University Professor Positions

Harvard University has announced the appointment of three faculty members to endowed University Professor positions. University Professors at Harvard can pursue research and teach at any school throughout the university. It is the highest faculty honor bestowed at Harvard. With the appointment of three new University Professors, there will be a total of 25 scholars who hold these positions. Two of the three new University Professors at Harvard are women.

Arlene H. Sharpe was named the Kolokotrones University Professor. She is a professor and the chair of Harvard Medical School’s immunology department and co-leader of the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness. Dr. Sharpe studies T cells, a type of white blood cell that helps the body fight infection and may help defeat cancer. She is working to translate her research into new therapies for cancer and autoimmune diseases. Dr. Sharpe is a graduate of Harvard University and earned a medical doctorate and a Ph.D. at Harvard Medical School. She completed her residency in pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Catherine Dulac has been appointed the Samuel W. Morris University Professor. She is a professor of molecular and cellular biology who studies behavioral neuroscience, looking at mice to understand the molecular and neurological mechanisms behind innate social behaviors. Dr. Dulac joined the faculty at Harvard University in 1996 and was promoted to full professor in 2001. Professor Dulac earned a Ph.D. in developmental biology at the University of Paris in France and did postdoctoral research at Columbia University in New York City.
