In Memoriam: Mary Thompson, 1928-2017

Sister Mary Thompson, professor emerita at Saint Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota, died later last month. She was 89 years old.

Professor Thompson joined the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1949, earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at St. Catherine University in 1953. She went on to earn a master’s degree in chemistry at the University of Minnesota and Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Thompson joined the faculty at Saint Catherine University in 1964. She taught there for 36 years until her retirement in 2000. Professor Thompson chaired the chemistry department at the university for 21 years.

The Sister Mary Thompson Scholarship was established at Saint Catherine University to honor her dedication to women in science.
