Barnard College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in New York City, has announced the launch of the Social Justice Institute within the Barnard Center for Research on Women. The Social Justice Institute will provide support for a cohort of five activists to deepen their thinking; connect with new collaborators; begin or continue their projects; and build a broader platform for their critical perspectives and on-the-ground movement building work.
The inaugural Social Justice Institute Activists-in-Residence are Reina Gossett, Cara Page, Tarso Ramos, Andrea Ritchie, and Dean Spade.
The Barnard Center for Research on Women is led by Tina Campt, the Claire Tow and Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Africana and Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies. Dr. Campt is a graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from Cornell University. She is the author of three books including Other Germans: Black Germans and the Politics of Race, Gender and Memory in the Third Reich (University of Michigan Press, 2004).
