Arlene Sharpe Is the Only Woman Among the Five Winners of the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize

Arlene SharpeArlene Sharpe, the George Fabyan Professor of Comparative Pathology at Harvard Medical School, is one of five winners of the 2017 Warren Alpert Foundation Prize for transformative discoveries in the field of cancer immunology. Professor Sharpe is the only woman among the five winners. The five winners will each receive a $100,000 prize and participate in a day-long symposium at Harvard Medical School on October 5.

George Q. Daley, dean of Harvard Medical School, stated that “the work of this year’s recipients is nothing short of breathtaking in its profound impact on medicine. These discoveries have reshaped our understanding of the body’s response to cancer and propelled our ability to treat several forms of this recalcitrant disease.”

Professor Sharpe heads the division of immunology and is interim co-chair of the department of microbiology and immunobiology at Harvard Medical School. She holds a bachelor’s degree, a medical degree, and a Ph.D., all from Harvard University.
