A Trio of Women Who Have Been Appointed to Positions as Deans

Terry Martinez was appointed vice president and dean of student at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. She has been serving since 2014 as associate provost and dean of student life at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Earlier she was interim dean of students at Columbia University in New York City.

Martinez is a graduate of the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York System, where she majored in social work. She holds a master’s degree in applied psychology from New York University.

Verna L. Williams is the new interim dean of the College of Law at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. She is the Judge Joseph P. Kinneary Professor of Law and co-director of the Center for Race, Gender, and Social Justice at the law school. Professor Williams also is the co-director of the university’s joint degree program in law and women’s studies.

Professor Williams joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 2001. She is a graduate of Georgetown University and Harvard Law School.

Kathleen Canning will be the next dean of the humanities at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Currently, she is chair of the history department and the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of History at the University of Michigan. Dr. Canning will begin her duties as dean on January 1.

Dr. Canning has been on the faculty at the University of Michigan since 1988. She is a graduate of the University of Oregon. Professor Canning holds a master’s degree from Ruprecht-Karls University in Heidelberg, Germany, and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
