In Memoriam: Virginia Lester, 1931-2016

Virginia Lester, who served as president of what is now Mary Baldwin University from 1976 to 1985, died on November 10 in Alexandria, Virginia. She was 85 years old.
Dr. Lester grew up in Philadelphia and earned her bachelor’s degree at Pennsylvania State University. She went on to earn a master’s degree at Temple University in Philadelphia and a Ph.D. at Union Graduate School.
Dr. Lester held posts at Skidmore College and Empire State College both in Saratoga Springs, New York, before becoming president of what was then Mary Baldwin College in 1976. After stepping down as president in 1985, Dr. Lester earned a law degree at Stanford University. She later served as interim president of Friends World College, which is now part of Long Island University.
