In Memoriam: Sarah Nash Gates, 1949-2015

sarahnashgatesSarah Nash Gates, interim divisional dean of the arts and the former executive director of the School of Drama at the University of Washington, died at her home on December 4 after battling cancer. She was 66 years old.

Raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Gates earned a bachelor’s degree and a master of fine arts degree at Boston University and a master’s degree from the University of California. She taught at the State University of New York at Fredonia and Stephens College in Missouri before joining the faculty at the University of Washington. In 1994, she was appointed executive director of the School of Drama.

In 1991, Gates became the first woman and the first costume designer to serve as president of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. She also served as president of the University/Resident Theatre Association.
