In Memoriam: Meg Ellen Spencer, 1959-2015

Meg Spencer, librarian of the Cornell Science Library at Swarthmore College in suburban Philadelphia, died late last month from injuries suffered in an automobile accident, She was 55 years old.

Spencer was a graduate of Nether Providence High School in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology at the University of Richmond in Virginia and a master of library and information science degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Spencer joined the staff at Swarthmore College in 1981 as a research assistant in the department of psychology. She joined the library staff in 1983 and was named science librarian in 1999.

Valerie Smith, president of Swarthmore College, stated that “we have lost not only a dedicated, innovative professional, but an enthusiastic and generous mentor and advocate for all students.”
