The U.S. Department of Defense recently released its annual report on sexual assault cases at the three U.S. military academies: the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The study reports there were 70 sexual assaults at the three academies during the 2012-13 academic year. This was down from 80 sexual assaults reported in the prior academic year.
There were 45 reported sexual assaults at the U.S. Air Force Academy, by far the highest among the three campuses. But the number was down from 52 reports in the 2011-12 academic year. There were 15 reported sexual assaults at the U.S. Naval academy, up two from the previous year. At West Point, 10 sexual assaults were reported, down from 15 in 2011-12.
Dr. McEwen comes to her new appointment following four years as president and vice chancellor of Victoria University in the University of Toronto. Earlier, she served in several leadership roles at the University of Toronto Mississauga. She received some of her education in the United States.
The new provosts are Barbara Rodriguez at the University of New Mexico, Bridget Chalk at Manhattan University in New York, and Jaci Lederman at Vincennes University in Indiana. All three women had been serving as their university's interim provost.
Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
Dr. Gonko has led Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Michigan on an interim basis for the past year. She will assume the presidency of Macomb Community College on July 1.
Since 2014, Dr. Lynch has been the associate vice chancellor for educational development and technologies for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. She has been selected to serve as interim president of the system's Central Lakes College beginning on July 1.
