Joyce E. King, professor in the College of Education at Georgia State University in Atlanta, has been chosen as president-elect of the American Educational Research Association. She will serve for one year as president-elect beginning on May 1 and then become president of the association at the conclusion of the group’s 2014 annual meeting.
Professor King joined the faculty at Georgia State University in 2004 and currently holds the Benjamin E. Mays Endowed Chair of Urban Teaching, Learning, and Leadership. Before joining the faculty at Georgia State, she was a professor of education and provost at Spelman College. She also has served as associate provost at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn and as associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of New Orleans. She is the co-author of Black Mothers to Sons: Juxtaposing African American Literature With Social Practice (Peter Lang Publishing).
Dr. King holds a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in the social foundations of education from Stanford University.
