May Brodbeck was vice president for student affairs and dean of faculties at the university from 1974 to 1981. She worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II and later taught philosophy at the University of Minnesota for 25 years.
Sally Mason to Step Down as President of the University of Iowa
Sally Mason, who has served as president of the University of Iowa for the past eight years, has announced that she will retire on August 1. A molecular biologist, Dr. Mason is the former provost of Purdue University in Indiana.
Bettie A. Truitt Appointed President of Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois
Dr. Truitt joined the faculty at the college in 1989 as an instructor of mathematics. Over her long career there, she has served as dean of instruction and academic support, vice president of instruction, executive vice president, and interim president.
Marcella David Named Provost at Florida A&M University
Marcella David has been serving as professor of law and international studies and associate dean in the College of Law at the University of Iowa. She is a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Michigan School of Law.
Cathleen Moore to Lead the Psychonomic Society
The Psychonomic Society, founded in 1959, is the home for scientists who study how the mind works. The society publishes six academic journals. Dr. Moore is a professor of psychology at the University of Iowa.
In Memoriam: Kathryn M. Chaloner, 1954-2014
Kathryn M. Chaloner wa a professor and chair of the department of biostatistics at the University of Iowa. She joined the university’s faculty in 2002 after teaching at the University of Minnesota for 20 years.
Yale University’s Rolena Adorno Honored by the Modern Language Association
Rolena Adorno, the Sterling Professor of Spanish and chair of the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, has been selected to receive the Lifetime Scholarly Achievement Award from the Modern Language Association.
University of Iowa to Add Three Full-Time Sexual Assault Prevention Specialists
The Women’s Resource & Action Center will add a new prevention specialist to its staff and another position will be upgraded from part-time to full-time. In addition, the university’s Rape Victim Advocacy Program will hire a new sexual violence prevention expert to its staff.
University of Iowa Research Examines Nonreporting of Sexual Assault in the Military
The data from a suvery of active duty and veteran women showed that 15 percent had been sexually assaulted while serving in the military. But only one quarter of those who had been sexually assaulted reported the crimes to their superiors.
In Memoriam: Jewel Limar Prestage, 1931-2014
At the age of 22, she earned a Ph.D. in political science at the University of Iowa. She was the first African American women to receive a Ph.D. in political science from an American university. She then taught for 33 years at Southern University in Baton Rouge.
In Memoriam: Nancy Ewald Jackson, 1946-2014
Professor Johnson taught at the University of Washington. She later taught educational psychology at the University of Iowa.
The First Woman President of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina
Since 2008, Dr. Janes Fernandes has served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She is the former provost at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. She will begin her new duties on July 1.
In Memoriam: Norene Alys Smith, 1929-2014
In 1961, Dr. Smith was named the inaugural assistant dean of women at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Later, she was the inaugural director of the university’s Counseling and Testing Center and associate dean of students.

In Memoriam: Helen Hislop, 1929-2013
From 1975 to 1998, Dr. Hislop was the chair of the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She developed the first Ph.D. program in physical therapy in the United States.
