The women who have been selected for endowed appointments are Deanna Kerrigan at Rutgers University, Jo Hardin at Pomona College, Anna Lemnitzer at West Texas A&M University, Aliaa Bassiouny at Washington and Lee University, and Kimryn Rathmel at Ohio State University.
On June 7, Dr. Pardis Mahdavi announced her immediate resignation as president of the University of La Verne in California, after holding the position for less than a year. She was the second woman to serve in the role.
The women named to endowed faculty positions are April Mayes at Pomona College, Emilie Townes at Boston University, Jane Carlton at Johns Hopkins University, and Emily Huff at Clemson University.
The women appointed to endowed faculty positions are Tiffany Messer at the University of Kentucky, April Kloxin at the University of Delaware, Michelle Olsen at Virginia Tech, and Rachel Levin at Pomona College.
Dr. Dornish joined the faculty at Pomona College in 1969. When she began at Pomona, Dr. Dornish was among a handful of women faculty and the lone female instructor in a building that did not have a women’s bathroom.
Pomona College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Claremont, California, has announced the appointment of nine scholars to endowed professorships. Four of these appointments went to women: Cherene Sherrard Johnson in English, Ami E. Radunskaya in mathematics and statistics, Erin M. Runions in religious studies, and G. Gabrielle Starr, who is president of the college.
The nine women appointed to dean positions are Yuqing Melanie Wu, Keren Yarhi-Milo, Akilah Carter-Francique, Deborah R. Marinski, Kimberly Griffin, Alyssa Crittenden, Kimberly White-Smith, Glenda Gillaspy, and Ana M. Franco-Watkins.
An avid advocate for women in science, Dr. Hoopes served as Pomona College’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college from 1993 to 1998. She was the first scientist and woman appointed dean of the college at Pomona.
After completing her master's degree in music literature in 1945 at the University of Rochester, Smith took a position at the University of Hawaii to teach piano and music theory in the newly established music department. In 1957, she taught the university's first course on non-Western music.
