Three Women Deans Are Leaving Their Posts
Katy Smith Abbott, dean of the college at Middlebury College in Vermont, and Sally Blount, dean of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, announced they will step down and return to teaching full-time. Nancy Marcus, dean of the Graduate School at Florida State University has retired.

Academic Study Finds That Women Abused as Children Have Higher Mortality Rates Over the Long Term
In a study led by Edith Chen, a professor of psychology at Northwestern University, results showed that women who reported they were abused as children had a higher level of mortality over the long term than women who did not report child abuse. There was no difference in mortality rates for men who were abused compared to men who were not abused.
University of California, Riverside Scholar Honored With a Book Award
Anthea Kraut, professor of dance at the University of California Riverside, will receive the 2015-16 Emory Elliott Book Award that honors a book published by a faculty member in the College of Humanities at the university.

Study Led by Northwestern University Scientists Finds Women Vastly Underrepresented in Genomics Scholarship
The authors examined the publication records of nearly 4,000 faculty members in six different STEM fields: chemical engineering, chemistry, ecology, materials science, molecular biology, and psychology. The researchers found that females are underrepresented in large teams in genomics (a subdiscipline of molecular biology).

In Memoriam: Kathryn D. Sowle, 1932-2016
Sowle graduated first in her class from the Northwestern University School of Law. She went on to serve as a professor at the law school of Ohio State University and then at the University of Miami School of Law. In 1969, she took time off from her successful academic career to serve as First Lady of Ohio University.
Women, But Not Men, Who Were Abused as Children Are at Risk for Early Death
The study included interviews of 6,000 adults with an average age of 47. These adults were followed for the next 20 years, with 17.5 percent of them dying during the 20-year period. Women who reported childhood abuse had a higher mortality rate but this was not the case for men who were abused as children.
University Study Examines Differences in Depression Among Women Before and After Giving Birth
The study of women who suffered from postpartum depression by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Pittsburgh found that 24.9 percent of participants developed depression pre-pregnancy, 36.7 percent developed it during pregnancy, and 38.4 percent developed depression during the postpartum period.

Northwestern University Study Finds Gender Differences in Substance Abuse Among Delinquent Teenagers
The 12-year study followed 1,829 youths randomly sampled from detention facilities in Chicago, Illinois, starting in 1995. The study found that 78.5 percent of women had developed a substance use disorder. Women were more likely than men to have a substance use disorder related to cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and sedatives.
