Kathleen Poorman Dougherty Selected as the Next Provost at Marietta College in Ohio
Dr. Dougherty was the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Alma College in Michigan from 2018 to 2022 and has been on sabbatical this past year. Earlier, she served as the inaugural dean for the School of Humanities and subsequently led the School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Three Women Who Serve as College or University Presidents Have Announced Their Retirements
Janet Eisner, president of Emmanuel College since 1979, the nation’s longest-serving woman college president currently in office, is retiring in 2022. Christine Pharr, president of Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, and Faith C. Hensrud, president of Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College in Bemidji, Minnesota, also have announced they will step down next year.
In Memoriam: Ellen Lorenz, 1935-2020
Dr. Lorenz joined the faculty of Mount Mary University as director of secondary education in 1968, rising to the post of academic dean by 1976. In 1979, she was appointed president of Mount Mary, continuing in that role until 1987.

Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Names Its Next President
Dr. Christine Pharr will become president of Mount Mary University on July 1, upon the retirement of Ellen Schwalbach who has led the educational institution since 2008. Dr. Pharr currently serves as vice president for alumnae and donor relations at the College of St. Mary in Omaha, Nebraska.
Mount Mary University President to Step Down in 2017
Eileen Mihm Schwalbach has been president of the university in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, since 2009 and has served on the full-time faculty there since 1997. The university’s undergraduate programs are open only to women and currently enroll about 860 students.
