A new study by faculty members at the University of Virginia finds that women athletes have an increased risk of suffering sports-related concussions. And for those athletes that suffer concussions, women report more severe symptoms than men.

Brain scans of women bulimics showed decreased blood flow in the precuneus, the area of the brain responsible for self-reflection, when the women were shown pictures of high-sugar and high-fat foods. Women without bulimia had increased blood flow to the same neural region when shown the identical photographs.

Lynna Williams was an associate professor of English and creative writing at Emory University in Atlanta. An accomplished short story writer, she joined the faculty at Emory University in 1990 and was the second person to direct the university’s creative writing program.
