Elsa M. NuÌñez was the first Latina to serve as a university president in New England. Before being named president of Eastern Connecticut State University in 2006, Dr. NuÌñez served as vice chancellor for academic and student affairs in the University of Maine System and provost and vice president for academic affairs at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The University of Saint Joseph enrolls about 1,000 women in undergraduate programs. There are approximately 1,600 students enrolled in the university's co-educational graduate programs. Dr. Free will take office on July 1.
Rhona Free is provost and vice president for academic affairs at Eastern Connecticut State University and Margaret E. Madden is provost and vice president for academic affairs at the Potsdam campus of the State University of New York System.
The honorees are Elsa M. Nunez of Eastern Connecticut State University, Eileen Sullivan-Marx of NYU, Marcella Kelly of Virginia Tech, Tatiana Homonoff of Cornell University, and Lisa Tedesco of Emory University.
