In Memoriam: Kimberley Jessica Johnson Evans, 1973-2023
Dr. Evans joined the Duke University family in 1998 as an internal medicine resident and was named a fellow in nephrology in 2001. She joined the faculty in 2003 and became assistant professor of medicine in 2008.
In Memoriam: Ruby Leila Wilson, 1931-2023
Dr. Wilson began her academic career as an instructor in advanced medical-surgical nursing at Duke University in 1955. She was appointed dean of the Duke University School of Nursing in 1971 and served in that role until 1984 when she was appointed assistant to the chancellor for health affairs at Duke.
Karen Colley Is the New Provost at the University of Illinois Chicago
Dr. Collley has been serving as acting provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. She joined the faculty at the university in 1991 and was named a full professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular genetics in 2002. Dr. Colley is the former dean of the Graduate College.

Since 2012, Brown has served as chief executive officer for Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast. Prior to leading the Girl Scouts, Brown served as vice chancellor for finance and administrative affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 2007 to 2012. Earlier, she was executive vice president and general counsel at Milwaukee Area Technical College from 2002 to 2007.

In Memoriam: Lee Walker Willard, 1951-2023
Early in her career, Dr. Willard taught at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Maryland. At Duke University, she served Trinity College for 37 years under the leadership of 10 deans as assistant dean, associate dean, senior associate dean, and associate vice provost of undergraduate education.
Three Women Scholars Share the 2023 BBVA Ecology and Conservation Biology Frontiers of Knowledge Award
Three women scientists are sharing the 2023 Ecology and Conservation Biology Frontiers of Knowledge Award from the BBVA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria. Three three award winners are Jeanne Altmann of Princeton University, Susan Alberts of Duke University, and Marlene Zuk of the University of Minnesota.
Susan Athey Elected President of the American Economics Association
Dr. Athey began her academic career in 1995 as an assistant professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 2001 to 2006, Dr. Athey taught at Stanford University before joining the economics faculty at Harvard University. In 2013, she returned to Stanford.
Ingrid Daubechies Wins the 2023 Wolf Prize in Mathematics
Dr. Daubechies is one of the world’s leading authorities on wavelet theory, a technique frequently used to shrink digital photos and movies so that they take up fewer kilobytes without noticeably losing detail. Her methods have been used to digitize the FBI’s vast fingerprint repository and to determine the authenticity of the works of the Great Masters.
In Memoriam: Laura M. Whitman, 1964-2023
Dr. Whitman joined the faculty at Yale Medical School in 1997. She served as the associate program director for ambulatory education for the Traditional Internal Medicine Residency from 2004–2013. Later, Dr. Whitman was medical director of the Primary Care Center at Yale New Haven Hospital and then as a medical director of the New Haven Primary Care Consortium.

Susan Athey, the Economics of Technology Endowed Professor at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, will remain a member of the faculty on a part-time basis. She will step down as associate director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.
In Memoriam: Joyce Cohen Lashof, 1926-2022
In 1973, Dr. Lashof became the first female director of the State of Illinois Public Health Department. She served as deputy assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and as assistant director of the Office of Technology Assessment before becoming the first female dean of the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health.
