Currently serving as the CEO of Higher Education Consulting, Dr. Bryan is widely recognized for her skill in obtaining accreditation program approvals, driving organizational development, and leading expansion efforts. She was employed by the college for 26 years in various roles.
Denise Richardson Appointed President of Berkeley City College in California
Dr. Richardson has been working as interim president since July 1, 2023. Earlier, Dr. Richardson was the vice president of instruction at Merritt College in Oakland, a role she began in March 2020. She has been an employee of the Peralta Community College District for over 20 years.
Patricia A. Sharpnack of Ursuline College Chosen to Lead the National League for Nursing
Dr. Sharpnack has been dean of the Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio, since 2006. She is a fellow in the Academy of Nurse Educators and president of the Ohio Board of Nursing.
Two Women Who Have Been Appointed to Provost Positions
Marion Underwood, dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences and distinguished professor of psychological sciences at Purdue University in Indiana, has been appointed provost and executive vice president at Colorado State University, effective January 1. Sandra Hamar is the new provost and vice president for academic affairs at Columbia College in Missouri. She had been serving as dean of the School of Public Service at the college.
Shannon Schmoll to Lead the International Planetarium Society
Dr. Schmoll is the director of the Abrams Planetarium and an instructor in the department of physics and astronomy in the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University, She will serve a six-year term beginning this year — two years each as president-elect, president, and past president.
Melissa Gilliam Will Be the First Woman President of Boston University
Dr. Gilliam has been provost at Ohio State University since July 2021. Earlier, she was vice provost, the Ellen H. Block Distinguished Service Professor of Health Justice, and professor of obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics at the University of Chicago. She will become president of Boston University on July 1, 2024.
Anne Howsare Boyens Chosen as the Eighth President of the Iowa Valley Community College District
Since 2017, Dr. Howsare Boyens has been serving as provost at Des Moines Area Community College, Urban Campus in Des Moines. She began her tenure at Des Moines Area Community College in 2003 as a counselor.
Harvard University’s Claudia Goldin to Receive the Nobel Prize in Economics
Professor Goldin has collected over 200 years of data from the U.S., allowing her to demonstrate how and why gender differences in earnings and employment rates have changed over time. She has shown that the bulk of this earnings difference is now between men and women in the same occupation and that it largely arises with the birth of the first child.
Elaine Howard Ecklund of Rice University Selected as President of the Religious Research Association
Dr. Ecklund joined the faculty at Rice University in 2008 as an assistant professor of sociology, after teaching at the University at Buffalo. She was promoted to full professor in 2013. She also serves as the director of the university’s Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance.
Lynn Akey Will Be the Next Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside
Since 2019, Dr. Akey has been vice president for student success, analytics, and integrated planning at Minnesota State University, Mankato. She has served the Mankato campus since 2000 in such roles as associate vice president for institutional research, strategy, and effectiveness and assistant to the vice president for student affairs.
University of Pennsylvania Scholar to Share the Nobel Prize in Medicine
Katalin Karikó, an adjunct professor of neurosurgery and a research scientist at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania is sharing this year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine. She and her colleague Drew Weissman, the Roberts Family Professor in Vaccine Research at the University of Pennsylvania, were recognized for their groundbreaking resarch which led to the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19.
Margo DelliCarpini Selected to Lead the Commonwealth Campuses of Pennsylvania State University
Dr. DelliCarpini has been serving as chancellor and dean of Pennsylvania State University Abington. Earlier, she was vice provost for strategic educational partnerships and dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She previously served as professor and dean of the College of Education at Morehead State University in Kentucky

Berenecea Johnson Eanes Will Be the First Woman President of California State University, Los Angeles
Since 2020, Dr. Eanes has served as president of York College of the City University of New York. She served as vice president for student affairs at California State University, Fullerton from 2012 to 2019. Earlier, Dr. Eanes was vice president of student affairs at John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York.
U.S. News and World Report’s Latest Rankings of the Nation’s Top Women’s Colleges
Wellesley College in Massachusetts was ranked in a tie for fourth overall, behind only Williams College, Amherst College, and the U.S. Naval Academy, and was tied with Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, and Pomona College in California. Barnard College in New York City jumped from 22nd place in 2020, to 17th place in 2021, and 18th place in 2022. This year Barnard is in a five-way tie for 11th place.
Girl Scout Leader Agenia Walker Clark Will Be the Next President of Fisk University in Nashville
For the past 19 years, Dr. Clark has been CEO of the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee. Prior to the Girl Scouts, Dr. Clark was the vice president of human resources for the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation, senior director of human resources at Vanderbilt University, and directed human resources for Canadian telecommunications provider Nortel Networks.

Qian “Jenny” Du is the Bobby Shackouls Professor at Mississippi State University. Before joining the faculty at Mississippi State in 2004, Dr. Du was an assistant professor in the department of electrical engineering and computer science at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, from 2000 to 2004.
Temple University President JoAnne Epps Dies Suddenly at Campus Service
JoAnne A. Epps, acting president of Temple University in Philadelphia, collapsed on stage during a celebration of life ceremony for Charles L. Blockson on September 19, where she was scheduled to speak. She was taken from the stage to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. President Epps was 72 years old
Arkansas Tech President Robin Bowen Was Fired While She Was on Medical Leave
Dr. Bowen became the twelfth president of Arkansas Tech University in Russellville in July 2014. She was not only the institution’s first woman president but also was the first woman to lead any state-operated four-year university in the state of Arkansas.

Stanford University Appoints Jenny Martinez as Its Next Provost
Jenny S. Martinez is the dean of Stanford Law School and the Richard E. Lang Professor of Law. Prior to her appointment as law school dean, she served as associate dean for curriculum from 2013 to 2016. Professor Martinez is a leading expert on the role of courts and tribunals in advancing human rights. She will become the 14th provost of Stanford University on October 1.
Carey McDougall Is the New Leader of the Penn State Beaver Campus in Monaca
McDougall has served as the chief academic officer at the Beaver campus since 2014. Before coming to Penn State Beaver, she was an associate professor of art at the Stark campus of Kent State University in Ohio.
Jennifer Dugan Is the New Provost at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio
Since 2019, Dr. Dugan has served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pikesville in Kentucky. Earlier in her career, Dr. Dugan served on the political science faculty at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Emily Messer Is the New President of Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth
Dr. Messer comes to Texas Wesleyan from Jacksonville State University in Alabama where she served as vice president for advancement and enrollment management. Donna Fry Is the New Leader of the University of Michigan-Flint
Dr. Fry has been serving as the dean of the College of Health Sciences at the Flint campus since 2015. She holds a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy and a Ph.D. in kinesiology and exercise science from the University of Michigan.
Donna Shalala Chosen as the Leader of The New School in New York City
Dr. Shalala was the president of the University of Miami from 2001 to 2015. During the Clinton administration, Dr. Shalala served as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services for eight years. Earlier in her career, she was chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and president of Hunter College of the City University of New York.
Anita Olson Gustafson Is the First Woman President of Presbyterian College in South Carolina
Dr. Gustafson was the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a professor of history at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Professor Gustafson’s teaching and scholarly interests include American immigration history, Swedish immigration, and the history of American women.

Karen Colley Is the New Provost at the University of Illinois Chicago
Dr. Collley has been serving as acting provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. She joined the faculty at the university in 1991 and was named a full professor in the department of biochemistry and molecular genetics in 2002. Dr. Colley is the former dean of the Graduate College.
