Alice Harris Elected to Lead the Linguistic Society of America
Alice C. Harris is a professor of linguistics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She will become president of the 5,000-member Linguistic Society of America in 2016 after serving for a year as vice president and president-elect.
The New President of San Bernardino Valley College in California
Gloria Fisher has been serving as interim president of the college since July and has served on the college’s faculty and staff for the past 23 years. She earned a juris doctorate at the San Joaquin College of Law in Fresno, California.
Valerie Harrison Now Leading The Lincoln University
The board of trustees of The Lincoln University in Pennsylvania has named Valerie Harrison as acting president of the university. She has been serving as the university’s General Counsel since 2013 and previously had held a similar post at Arcadia University.
Kathleen Murray Appointed President of Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington
At the current time, Dr. Murray serves as provost, dean of the faculty, and professor of music at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She will become the 14th president of the 1,500-student Whitman College in July 2015.
The Next President of Middlebury College
Laurie L. Patton was named the next president of Middlebury College in Vermont. She will take office on July 1, 2015. Dr. Patton currently serves as professor of religion and dean of the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University.
Women From Kenya and South Africa Who Study in the United States Win Rhodes Scholarships
Miriam Kilimo, a 2014 graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, won a Rhodes Scholarship reserved for students from Kenya. Jessica Glennie, a native of South Africa and an architecture student at the University of Texas, also has been selected as a Rhodes Scholar.
The First Woman to Serve as President of Virginia State University
When she takes office in January, Dr. Pamela Valleria Wilson Hammond will the first woman president in the 133-year history of the university. Since 2009, Dr. Hammond has served as provost at Hampton University in Virginia.

Since 2011, Dr. Belinda S. Miles has served as provost and executive vice president of access, learning, and success at Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, Ohio. She will begin her new duties in January.

Arizona State University Professor to Lead the National Institute of Justice
Created in 1969, the National Institute of Justice funds and supervises criminal justice research that focuses on crime reduction and the promotion of justice on the state and local level. President Obama has nominated Nancy Rodriguez to be the institute’s next director.
The New Leader of the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University
Sue Carter has been appointed director of The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University in Bloomington. The institute was founded in 1947 by Alfred Kinsey, a pioneer in the study of human sexuality.

Beverly Walker-Griffea, the new president of Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan, will serve for one year as president-elect and then assume the presidency of the organization in 2015 for a two-year term.
Betty Young to Lead Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio
Betty Young was named interim president of Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio. The two-year college, located southeast of Columbus, enrolls about 4,100 students. Women make up 51 percent of the student body.

Cathy Sandeen has been serving as vice president for education attainment and innovation at the American Council on Education. She is the former dean of continuing education at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to Join the Faculty at George Washington University
Alison Macfarlane has served as the 15th chair of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission since July 2012. She is the third woman to hold the post. In January, she will join the faculty at the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University.
Linda Brady to Step Down as Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Linda P. Brady, chancellor of the University of North Carolina Greensboro, has announced that she will step down on July 31, 2015 and return to teaching. She was named the university’s tenth chancellor in August 2008.
Dianna Phillips to Lead the Community College of the University of the District of Columbia
Dr. Phillips has been serving as executive vice president for educational services at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, New Jersey. Previously, she was dean of technical education at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York.

Dr. Gutmann has served as president of the University of Pennsylvania since 2004. She also serves as the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science and professor of communication in the Annenberg School for Communication at Penn.

Dava Newman, professor of aeronautics and astronautics and professor of engineering systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been nominated by President Obama as deputy administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Debra Townsley to Leave the Presidency of William Peace University
Dr. Townsley had angered many students and alumnae in 2012 when she announced the plan to turn Peace College, a liberal arts educational institution for women into a co-educational institution. Despite a no-confidence vote from the faculty, she retained the support of the trustees.

Elizabeth Garrett is currently provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. When she takes office on July 1, 2015, she will become the first woman president of Cornell.

In 2000, Dr. Ann Williams became chancellor of the Lehigh Valley campus located in Center Valley. Previously, she spent 19 years as a professor and administrator at Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. She will retire in July 2015.
Berkeley Scholar Named as the Next U.S. Ambassador to Mexico
Maria Echaveste is the director of policy and program development for the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy at the School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. If confirmed, she will be the first woman to hold the position.

In 2013, only 5.8 percent of married-couple families lived in poverty. For families headed by a single man, 15.9 percent of all families were poor. But for families headed by a single woman, 30.6 percent of all families were poor.
New White House Initiative to Prevent Sexual Assault on College Campuses
President Obama has announced the “It’s On Us” initiative which seeks to engage college students and the entire campus community in efforts to prevent sexual assault. The campaign will focus on motivating college men to get involved in prevention efforts.

Michelle Johnston Appointed President of the University of Rio Grande in Ohio
When she takes office on September 29, Dr. Johnston will be the 22nd president and the second woman president of the University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College in south-central Ohio. She has been serving as a senior vice president at the University of Montevallo in Alabama.
