The Next Leader of the School of Engineering at Alfred University in New York
For the past 10 years, Gabrielle Gaustad has been on the faculty at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Most recently, Dr. Gaustad was an associate professor and program coordinator for the master’s degree program of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Kilgore College’s First Woman President Has Her Contract Extended for Five Years
Dr. Kays was appointed as the educational institution’s ninth president in 2016. She is the first woman to serve as president in the college’s history. In the past, the college had only given its president two-year deals.
Wanda Austin Is the New Leader of the University of Southern California
From 2008 to 2016, Dr. Austin was president and CEO of The Aerospace Corporation, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to the application of science and technology relating to the nation’s space program. She was the first woman and the first African American to serve as CEO of the organization since its founding in 1961.
Karrin Wilks to Lead the Borough of Manhattan Community College in New York City
Dr. Wilks has been serving as senior vice president and provost at the college since 2014 and has been with the City University of New York for eight years. Earlier, Dr. Wilks was senior vice president at Vermont State Colleges. She will become interim president of the CUNY campus on September 1.
The New President of Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn
A native of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Claudia V. Schrader was appointed president of Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Schrader has been serving as provost and senior vice president for academic and student success at Bronx Community College.
Rachelle Karstens Appointed the Eleventh President of Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa
President Karstens came to Briar Cliff University in May 2017 as chief of staff to the university’s president. When the university’s president resigned two months later, Karstens was named interim president. She has now been appointed to the position on a permanent basis.
Stanford Law School Dean Elizabeth Magill Appointed Provost at the University of Virginia
Professor Magill has led Stanford Law School for the past six years. Earlier, she spent 15 years on the faculty of the University of Virginia School of Law. She is an expert on administrative law and constitutional structure. She will become provost at the University of Virginia in the summer of 2019.
Karen Lawrence Appointed President of the Huntington Library in California
Karen Lawrence, who served as president of Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York, for 10 years, has been named president of The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. She is the former dean of the School of Humanities at the University of California, Irvine.
Georgia Lorenz Is the New President of Seminole State College of Florida
Dr. Lorenz has been serving as vice president of academic affairs at Santa Monica College in California. From 2008 to 2014, she was dean of instructional services at the college. Prior to joining the staff at Santa Monica College, Dr. Lorenz was the associate director of the University of Southern California Center for Urban Education.
Donna H. Oliver Named Provost at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida
Dr. Oliver is the former president of Mississippi Valley State University. Earlier, she served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Edward Waters College and vice president for academic affairs at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She has also been on the faculty at Elon University in North Carolina.
New Report Finds a Gender Gap in the Numeracy Skills of Adults in the United States
The U.S. Department of Education reports that there is no gender gap between men and women in literacy rates in the United States. But men hold an edge over women in numeracy skills. Numeracy is defined as “the ability to understand and use mathematical information in a variety of life situations.”
Brown University’s Meenakshi Narain to Take Leadership Post With the Large Hadron Collider
Meenakshi Narain, professor of physics at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has been selected to lead the collaboration board for U.S. institutions participating in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland. She is the first woman to hold the position.
Claudine Gay Named Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University
Dr. Gay is the Wilbur A. Cowett Professor of Government and of African and African American Studies and is the founding chair of Harvard’s Inequality in America Initiative. She joined the faculty in 2006 and has served as dean of social science for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences since 2015.
Pamela Thoma to Lead the Women’s Studies Program at Washington State University
Dr. Thoma joined the faculty at Washington State University in 2007. She is an expert in Asian American literary and cultural studies, feminist media studies, and women’s literature.
Heidi Anderson Appointed the 16th President of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore
Since September 2017, Dr. Anderson has been special advisor to the president of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. She served as provost and vice president for academic affairs there from 2015 to 2017.
Mary Gallagher Appointed President of Los Angeles City College
Dr. Gallagher has served as interim president since January 2018. Previously, she served as vice president of administrative services at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and was acting president of that college for eight months.

For the past two years, Dr. Salomon-Fernandez has served as president of Cumberland County College in Vineland, New Jersey. Earlier, she held several positions at Massachusetts Bay Community College in Wellesley Hills, including interim president.

For the past seven years, Long has served as president of the West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Beckley. She is the former chair of the West Virginia University Board of Governors. Earlier, she served as superintendent of the Braxton County, West Virginia, school system.
Clemson University’s Kathy Headley to Lead the International Literacy Association
Kathy N. Headley, professor of literacy in the College of Education at Clemson University in South Carolina, will serve for one year as vice president and then become president of the board of directors of the association in 2019. She has served on the Clemson University faculty since 1987.
Sally Kornbluth’s Tenure as Provost at Duke University Extended for Five Years
Dr. Kornbluth became provost on July 1, 2014. Earlier, she had served as the James B. Duke Professor of pharmacology and cancer biology and the vice dean for basic science at the Duke School of Medicine. She will now serve as provost until at least 2024.
The New Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Asheville
Since 2013, Dr. Nancy J. Cable has been serving as president of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation. Earlier in her career, Dr. Cable was vice president and senior adviser to the president at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and dean of admission and financial aid at Davidson College in North Carolina.
Ann E. Cudd Selected to Be the Next Provost at the University of Pittsburgh
Since 2015, Dr. Cudd has served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston University. Earlier, she was vice provost and dean of undergraduate studies at the University of Kansas. Dr. Cudd came to the University of Kansas in 1988 and was named a Distinguished Professor of Philosophy in 2012.
Shepherd University Extends Contract of President Mary J.C. Hendrix
The board of governors of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, has extended the contract of President Mary J.C. Hendrix for an additional five years. She became the 16th president of the university in 2013. At that time, Dr. Hendrix was the first graduate of the university to be named president in the institution’s 144-year history.
Elizabeth Meade Appointed President of Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania
Dr. Meade has been serving as interim president since former president Carmen Twillie Ambar left last summer to become president of Oberlin College in Ohio. Prior to becoming interim president in July 2017, Dr. Meade served as provost for five years.
Jinliu Wang Appointed Interim President at the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute
Last fall, Dr. Wang was named interim provost for the State University of New York System. Earlier, she has served as vice chancellor for research and economic development. Previously, Dr. Wang was assistant director for engineering at the National Science Foundation.
A Change in Leadership at Keuka College in New York State
When the president of the college stepped down due to a death in his family, the board of trustees of Keuka College named Amy Storey as interim president. Story has been serving since 2013 as vice president for advancement and external affairs and chief advancement officer at the college.
Tanya Millner-Harlee to Lead Manchester Community College in Connecticut
Tanya Millner-Harlee is the interim Campus CEO of Manchester Community College in Connecticut. She is a professor of English and has been serving as interim dean of academic affairs at the college. She will serve while a search is conducted for an individual to fill the position on a permanent basis.
Joanne Passaro Named the Sixth President of Metropolitan College of New York
Since 2007, Dr. Passaro has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Earlier in her career, she served for seven years in a number of positions at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
Wilma Mishoe Named the Eleventh President of Delaware State University
Dr. Mishoe has been serving in the post on an interim basis since January. Previously, she was chair of the university’s board of trustees, the first women to hold the post in the university’s history.

Robin Lightner will serve as dean of Blue Ash College, a regional campus of the University of Cincinnati and Alysia Starkey was promoted to interim dean and CEO of the Polytechnic Campus of Kansas State University in Salina.

Since 2015, Dr. Jagger has served as vice president for academic affairs and dean of Thomas More College. Previously, she was a professor of biology and held several administrative posts at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.
Cathy Sandeen Named Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage
Dr. Sandeen has been serving as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin Colleges and University of Wisconsin Extension. Earlier, she held leadership positions at University of California campuses at Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco. She will begin her new job on September 15.
