Laura Olson Elected President of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion
Dr. Olson is J. Strom Thurmond Professor of Political Science at Clemson University in South Carolina. She focuses her research on contemporary religion, civic engagement, and American politics. For five years, she served as as editor of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion.
Margaret Spellings to Retire as President of the University of North Carolina System in March
Before taking on her presidency, Spellings served as the U.S. Secretary of Education for President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2009 and as Chief Domestic Policy Advisor to the White House from 2001 to 2005. She has been president of the University of North Carolina Systems since 2016.
Melinda Treadwell Appointed the Eleventh President of Keene State College in New Hampshire
Dr. Treadwell has been serving in the role of interim president since July 2017. Before being named interim president, Dr. Treadwell had been serving since 2014 as provost and CEO at Antioch New England University also in Keene, New Hampshire. Previously, she was interim provost at Keene State College.
Duke University’s Susan Lozier to Lead the American Geophysical Union
Dr. Lozier has been a Duke faculty member since 1992. She is widely cited for research on large-scale ocean circulation and its links to global climate change. She will begin her two-year term as president-elect of the American Geophysical Union on January 1, 2019, followed by a two-year term as president beginning in 2021.
Patricia Sims Named President of J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College In Alabama
Dr. Sims has 25 years of experience in K-12 and higher education. Most recently, she was the dean of the College of Education at Athens State University in Alabama. Before that, she was the director of student services management and dean of instructional and student services at Drake State.
The First Woman President of New River Community and Technical College in West Virginia
In January, Bonny Copenhaver will become the first woman president of New River Community and Technical College in Beaver, West Virginia. She has been serving as vice president of academic affairs and campus administrator at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in Superior, Wisconsin.
President of the College of DuPage Resigns to Become Leader of the Naval Postgraduate School
Ann Rondeau, president of the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, has announced she will leave the college at the end of December to become president of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Dr. Rondeau became the College of DuPage’s sixth president in May 2016. She is the first woman to ever hold the position.
Change in Leadership at St. Mary’s College in Indiana
Janice Cervelli, president of St. Mary’s College in Indiana, has recently announced her resignation. The college’s provost, Nancy Nekvasil, will take over as interim president. The college will not begin their search for a permanent president until summer 2019. Therefore, Dr. Nekvasil will serve in her new role as interim president until summer 2020.
Macey Edmondson to Lead the National Association of Law Student Affairs Professionals
Macey Edmondson is assistant dean for student affairs at the University of Mississippi School of Law. She will serve as president of the National Association of Law Student Affairs Professionals for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Elizabeth Dooley Named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Central Florida
Dr. Dooley has worked for the university since 2015 and most recently served as the interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. Before coming to the University of Central Florida, Dr. Dooley spent 25 years at West Virginia University.
Elizabeth Elliott Has Been Selected to Lead the Educational Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi
Elizabeth M. Elliott is a professor in the College of Education and director of the Family Resource Center at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Meyers. She has taught at Florida Gulf Coast University since 2001 and has been a member of Kappa Delta Pi since 1995. She will become president of the organization in 2020.
CalTech Professor Frances Arnold Wins the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Frances H. Arnold, the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology, has won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. According to the award citation, she is being honored for “the directed evolution of enzymes.”
Lynne A. Isbell Chosen to Lead the American Society of Primatologists
Professor Isbell, a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Davis, studies the behavior, ecology, and evolutionary history of primates. She researches primate socio-ecology and any topic that relates to how ecological conditions influence social behavior and organization.

Dr. Haynes became president of California State University, San Marcos in 2004. At the time, the university only enrolled 7,000 students, but under her leadership she more than doubled that number.
Donna Strickland Is the Third Woman to Earn the Nobel Prize in Physics
From 1964 to 2017, no woman was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. But this year, Donna Stickland, an associate professor of physics at the University of Waterloo in Canada is sharing the prize with two men. She is the third woman in the 117-year history of the Nobel Prize in physics to win the award.
Debra Elmegreen to Lead the International Astronomical Union
Debra M. Elmegreen is a professor of astronomy and the holder of the Maria Mitchell Chair in the department of physics and astronomy at Vassar College in Poughkeppsie, New York. She has taught at the highly rated liberal arts college since 1985.
Lisa Freeman Becomes First Woman President of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb
Lisa C. Freeman has been appointed as the thirteenth and first woman president of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She had been serving as acting president since July 2017. Before coming to Northern Illinois University in 2010, she served on the staff at Kansas State University for 16 years.
New Census Data Shows a Persisting and Large Gender Gap in Median Income in the United States
The median income of households headed by a single woman in the United States in 2017 was $41,703. These households made up nearly 19 percent of all family households in the United States. In contrast, for households headed by a single man in 2017, the median income figure was $60,843.
Kristin Woolever Announces She Will Retire as Chancellor of Penn State Brandywine
Dr. Woolever has held the position since February 2014. Before coming to Penn State, Dr. Woolever was the president of Prescott College in Arizona. Prior to that, she was dean and director of the campus at the University of New Hampshire-Manchester and director of the Centre for Creative Change at Antioch University in Seattle. She will retire on July 31, 2019.
Dartmouth College in New Hampshire Hires a Woman Football Coach
Callie Brownson has been named the offensive quality control coach for the Dartmouth College football team. With this appointment, she becomes the first full-time, woman football coach at the Division I level.
Nora Miller Named the Fifteenth President of the Mississippi University for Women
President Miller has worked for the university for 17 years. Most recently, she served as the chief financial officer and has been acting president since March 2018. Before being named senior vice president for administration and chief financial officer, Miller served as vice president for finance and administration for the university for 11 years.
Kim Carter Elected President of the Society of Research Administrators International
Carter is the executive director of the Office of Sponsored Projects Administration at the University of Kentucky and associate director of the University of Kentucky Research Foundation. Her term as president of the 5,000-member global society will start this October.
Paulette Dillard Appointed the Eighteenth President of Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina
Dr. Dillard had been serving as interim president of Shaw University since June 2017. Previously, she was the vice president of academic affairs and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the university. Dr. Dillard is a trained medical technologist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft to Step Down After 19 Years at the Helm
Since Dr. Genshaft became president in 2000, the university has seen enrollment increase by 40 percent. Graduation rates and research grant levels have tripled and the university’s endowment grew from $254 million to $480 million.

Regina Favors has been serving as president and CEO of Pinnacle Business Solutions, a subsidiary of Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield. Previously, she had worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has taught as an adjunct professor at Arkansas Baptist College.

Feng Youmei Is the First Woman Chancellor of Duke Kunshan University
Duke Kunshan University was founded six years ago. After only holding graduate classes for four years, the university enrolled its first cohort of undergraduate students in August. Feng Youmei, who has been a visiting scholar at Ohio State University in the past, is the first woman to lead Duke Kushan University.
Mary Romero Takes Over as President of the American Sociological Association
Dr. Romero is a professor in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. She joined the faculty at Arizona State University in 1995. Previously, she taught at the University of Oregon, San Francisco State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
Beth Boehm Is the New Provost at the University of Louisville in Kentucky
Dr. Boehm has been a faculty member of the English department at Louisville since 1987 and has been interim provost since May 2018. She was the inaugural permanent dean of the School of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies at the university.

Ann E. Harrison to Be the Next Dean of Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley
Currently, Dr. Harrison is the William H. Wurster Professor of Multinational Management and professor of business economics and public policy at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining the faculty at Wharton in 2012, Dr. Harrison was director of development policy at the World Bank.
Paula McClain Will Lead the American Political Science Association
Paula D. McClain, dean of the Graduate School at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, has been named the next president of the American Political Science Association. She will serve as president-elect for the 2018-2019 academic year and then as president for the following year.
Three Women Scholars Honored With Election as Fellows of the Entomological Society of America
The three women honorees are Christina M. Grozinger, Distinguished Professor of entomology at Pennsylvania State University, Ann E. Hajek, professor of entomology at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and A. Alma Solis, a research scientist and former associate dean of the College of Math Science and Technology at the University of Texas at Brownsville.
Marion Fedrick Appointed President of Albany State University in Georgia
Marion Fedrick has served as interim president since January. Before being named interim president, Fedrick had been serving as interim executive vice president at Albany State. Earlier, she was vice chancellor for human resources at the University System of Georgia.
