Ohio University’s Aimee Edmondson to Lead the American Journalism Historians Association
Aimee Edmondson, associate professor of journalism in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, is on the leadership track that will result in her being elected president of the American Journalism Historians Association at next fall’s annual conference in Memphis.
Cheryl Evans Jones Named the 17th President of Paine College in Augusta, Georgia
Dr. Jones first joined the Paine College faculty in 1993 as an assistant professor of psychology. In 2014, she served as Paine’s acting provost and vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Jones has been serving as acting president of Paine College since July.
University of Arkansas at Monticello Picks Peggy Doss as Its Next Chancellor
Peggy Doss has been selected at the next chancellor of the University of Arkansas at Monticello. She will take office on January 1. Dr. Doss currently serves as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. Earlier, she served for 10 years as dean of the university’s College of Education.
Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Names its First Woman President
Jill A. Murray has been serving as the college’s executive vice president and chief innovation officer. From 2008-2012, she operated as the college’s vice president of academic affairs. She will become the college ninth – and first woman – president on July 1, 2020.
Michelle Knight-Manuel is Named Executive Editor of the Teachers College Record
Professor Knight-Manuel is the thirteenth scholar to serve as editor in the journal’s 119-year history. Dr. Knight-Manuel’s research focuses on college readiness and access, immigrant youth’s civic strengths, and culturally relevant teacher preparation and professional development.
Dean at Illinois State University is the New Head of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans
Jean M. Miller, dean of the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University since 2015, will serve as president of the organization for three years. Dean Miller has been an active member of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans for 11 years.
Ann Bain Is the New Provost at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock
Dr. Bain joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1987 as an assistant professor of nursing. She served as chair of the department of nursing for 16 years, until she was named interim dean of the College of Sciences in 2013.
Karen Viskupic Named President of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers
Karen Viskupic is an assistant research professor of geosciences at Boise State University in Idaho. She works with geoscience faculty on curriculum development and assessment, advises all undergraduate geoscience students, and works on several campus-wide initiatives to improve undergraduate and graduate STEM student success.
Hamilton College’s Shelley Haley Elected to Lead the Society for Classical Studies
Dr. Haley is the Edward North Chair of Classics and professor of Classics and Africana Studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. She will serve for a year as president-elect of the society during 2020 and become president in January 2021.
Ginny Favede Named the Thirteenth President of Wheeling University in West Virginia
Favede has been serving as executive director of the Ohio Valley Construction Employers Council, a not-for-profit association of more than 500 contractors. She is a former county commissioner in West Virginia and has served as chair of the board of trustees of Wheeling University since July. She will step down from that position.
Julia Greer Is the New Director of the Kavli Nanoscience Institute at the California Institute of Technology
Dr. Greer’s research is highly interdisciplinary and focuses on creating 3-D micro- and nano-architected materials using 3-D lithography, nanofabrication, and additive manufacturing techniques. She joined the faculty at CalTech in 2007 and was promoted to full professor in 2013.
Educator Laurie Smith To Lead the Women’s Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor
Laurie Smith, a former adjunct faculty member and researcher at Mississippi State University, was executive director of the State Workforce Investment Board and senior education policy advisor to Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant. Dr. Smith formerly served as the executive director of the State Early Childhood Advisory Council.
Martha Ann Todd Appointed President of Columbus Technical College in Georgia
Todd has been serving as interim president of Columbus Technical College since July 1. Earlier, she served as deputy commissioner of adult and technical education for the Technical College System of Georgia.
Regina Stanback Stroud Appointed Chancellor of the Peralta Community College District in California
Dr. Stanback Stroud has more than 35 years of experience as an educator and leader. She served most recently as president of Skyline College in San Bruno, California. She served in that role from 2010 to 2019.
Angela Dearinger Is the New Commissioner of Public Health in Kentucky
Dr. Dearinger is assistant dean of accreditation with the Graduate Medical Education office and an associate professor in the department of internal medicine at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. She will remain a member of the university faculty during her service to the state.
Katrin Wesner-Harts Is the New President of the American College Health Association
Katrin Wesner-Harts is the director of the Abrons Student Health Center at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Prior to joining the staff at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2007, Dr. Wesner-Harts spent 18 years at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
Sandra Doran Elevated to the Presidency of Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Before coming to Salem College in 2018 to serve as interim president, Doran served as national program director of the New England Board of Higher Education and as entrepreneur-in-residence at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey.
Teresa Sullivan to Serve as Provost at Michigan State University
Teresa Sullivan is the former president of the University of Virginia. Earlier in her career, she was provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Michigan.
Shelley White Will Be the Next President of Haywood Community College in North Carolina
Currently, Dr. White is vice president for economic and workforce development and continuing education at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in North Carolina. She has been on the staff there for 18 years. She will begni her new job on January 1.
Janet Napolitano Announces She Will Step Down as President of the University of California in 2020
Napolitano is the first woman to lead the University of California System. Earlier, she was appointed secretary of Homeland Security at the beginning of the Obama administration. At the time she was serving in her second term as governor of Arizona. Previously, she had served as attorney general of Arizona and as the U.S. Attorney for Arizona.
Nancy Brown Appointed to Serve as the Next Dean of Yale Medical School
Brown is currently the Hugh Jackson Morgan Professor and chair of the department of medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She will become dean of Yale Medical School on February 1, 2020.
Marquette University in Milwaukee Announces Directors for Its New Institute for Women’s Leadership
Andrea Schneider, professor at Marquette University Law School, has been named the first director of the institute. Jean Grow, professor of strategic communication in the Diederich College of Communication, and Jennica Webster, associate professor of management in the College of Business Administration, will serve as co-directors of the institute.
Helen Griffith to Lead the Highly Successful Charter School at the University of California, San Diego
Since 2012, Dr. Griffith has been serving as the founding executive director and CEO of е3 Civic High, a public charter high school located in the San Diego Central Public Library. The Preuss School of the University of California, San Diego caters to low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college.
Christina Drale Is the New Leader of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock
Dr. Drale has served as interim executive vice chancellor and provost of the campus since October 2018. A member of the university’s administration since 2006, Dr. Drale was associate vice chancellor for faculty relations and administration before being named interim provost last year.
Wendy Hensel is the New Provost at Georgia State University in Atlanta
She has served in the post on an interim basis since July 1. Prior to serving as interim provost, Hensel served as interim and full dean of the College of Law from 2017 to 2019, as well as the first associate dean for research and faculty development from 2012-2017.
Three African American Women University Presidents Announce Their Retirements
WIlma Mishoe, president of Delaware State University, and Lucille H. Mauge, who until recently was interim president of Calrk Atlanta University, will retire at the end of 2019. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond, president of Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, will retire at the end of the current academic year.
Nancee Sorenson Is the New Chancellor of Louisiana State University Eunice
Since 2015, Dr. Sorenson has served as president of Hillsborough Community College, Brandon Campus, in Florida. Earlier, she held several administrative posts and was acting president at Pima Community College in Tuscon, Arizona.
The New Editor-in-Chief of Washington State University Press
Linda Bathgate comes to Washington State University Press after working for the University Press of Florida in Gainesville where she was deputy director and editor‐in‐chief. Earlier in her career, she served on the editorial staff at several publishing companies, including Routledge/Taylor & Francis and John Wiley & Sons.
The New Director of the School of Education at the University of Rhode Island
Dr. Danielle Dennis had been serving as an associate professor of literacy studies and co-coordinator of the Urban Teacher Residency Partnership Program at the University of South Florida. She holds a Ph.D. in language and literacy education from the University of Tennessee.
Linda Strong-Leek Is the New Provost at Berea College in Kentucky
Since 2015, Dr. Strong-Leek had been serving as vice president for diversity and inclusion at the college. Earlier in 2012, she was named associate vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Strong-Leek is also a professor of women’s and gender studies.
Beverly Rogers Named the Seventeenth President of MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois
Dr. Rogers has been serving as acting president for the past two months. Since 2017, she has served as provost and vice president of academic affairs. Previously, Dr. Rodgers was dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and professor of anthropology at Ottawa University in Kansas.
LaTonia Collins Smith Serving as Provost at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis
Dr. Collins Smith began her career in higher education at Harris-Stowe State University in 2010 as an academic counselor. She has served as executive director of the Center for Career Engagement and since 2016 she has been assistant provost.
Kathryn Cottingham Appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Ecology
Dr. Cottingham is the Dartmouth Professor in the Arts & Sciences, a professor in the department of biological sciences and in the Ecology, Evolution, Ecosystems, and Society Graduate Program at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Anita Mahadevan-Jansen Elected to the Presidential Track of SPIE
Dr. Mahadevan-Jansen currently serves as the Orrin H. Ingram Professor of Engineering and director of the Biophotonics Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. She will become president of SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics in 2022.
Kathie Stromile Golden Is the New Provost of Mississippi Valley State University
Most recently, Dr. Golden served as director of international programs and special assistant to the President’s Office at MVSU. Prior to that, she served as MVSU’s associate vice president for academic affairs.
