Na’ilah Suad Nasir Elected to Lead the American Educational Research Association
Since 2017, Dr. Nasir has been president of the Spencer Foundation, which has been a leading funder of education research since 1971. Earlier, she held the Birgeneau Chair in Educational Disparities and was vice-chancellor of equity and inclusion at the University of California, Berkeley.
Marcia White Appointed to Lead the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York
Marcia White, who is a graduate of the college, has served on the college’s board of trustees for 18 years. From 2005 to 2016, White was the president of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Her appointment as interim president is expected to last from 12 to 18 months.
Christina McIntyre of Virginia Tech to Lead the National Collegiate Honors Council
The organization’s mission is to support and strengthen the community of educational institutions, professionals, and students who partake in collegiate honors education worldwide. McIntyre will serve a year as vice president and a year as president-elect, before becoming president of the Council in 2022.
Two Women Scholars Appointed to Provost Positions
Debbie Storrs will serve as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of North Dakota for 13 months beginning in June. April White Pugh was appointed provost at Southern Wesleyan University in Central, South Carolina. She has been serving as interim provost since June 2019.
Maria Arvelo Lumpkin Is the New Leader of St. Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina
In October 2019, Dr. Lumpkin was named chief operating officer at Saint Augustine’s University. Previously, she served as the special assistant to the president, and as the inaugural executive director of student retention and the center for scholar communities at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.
Lori White Will Be the First Woman to Lead DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana
Dr. White has been serving as vice chancellor for student affairs at Washington University in St. Louis. Earlier, she worked as vice president for student affairs and clinical professor of education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Dr. White will become president of DePauw University on July 1.
A Trio of Women Appointed to Provost Positions at Colleges and Universities
Carolyn Kapinus is the new executive vice president for academic affairs and provost of Texas Woman’s University. Susan M. Collins was named acting provost at the University of Michigan and Karen Soul was appointed provost and dean of the college at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Karin Edwards Will Be the Next President of Clark College in Vancouver, Washington
Since July 2014, Dr. Edwards has served as president of Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus. Dr. Edwards has served in administrative roles at community colleges for the past 38 years. She will become president of Clark College this coming summer.
Bobbie Knight Is the New President of Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama
She has been serving as interim president since August 2019. President Knight is the former vice president of the Birmingham division of Alabama Power and the former chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority.
Bay Path University in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, Names Sandra J. Doran as Its Next President
Doran currently serves as president of Salem Academy and College in North Carolina, the oldest educational institution for girls and women in the United States. Earlier, she was chief of staff, vice president, and general counsel at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Erika James Will Be the First Woman to Lead the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania
When she takes office on July 1, Erika James will be the first woman and the first African American to lead the prestigious business school since its founding in 1881. Since 2014, Dr. James has been serving as dean of the Goizueta Business School at Emory University in Atlanta.
Jill Tiefenthaler Will Be the Next Chief Executive Officer of the National Geographic Society
Jill Tiefenthaler, president of Colorado College since 2011, will leave her post this summer to become the chief executive officer of the National Geographic Society. Dr. Tiefenthaler will be the first woman to lead the society in its 132-year history.
Barbara Snyder to Serve as President of the Association of American Universities
Barbara R. Snyder, president of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, has been chosen to lead the Association of American Universities. The organization represents 63 leading research universities in the United States, as well as two in Canada. She is expected to take on her new role this fall.
Katherine Douglas Is the New Leader of Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York
Dr. Douglas has worked in community college education for more than 40 years and was most recently president at Corning Community College in Steuben County, New York. She retired in June 2019 after eight years as president of that college.
Tina Heafner Elected President of the National Council for the Social Studies
Dr. Heafner is a professor in the department of middle, secondary, and K-12 education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Heafner is a long-time member of the National Council for the Social Studies and has served in a number of leadership positions for the organization.
Mary Dana Hinton Appointed President of Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia
Since 2014, Dr. Hinton has served as president of the Collge of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota. Before becoming president at the College of St. Benedict, Dr. Hinton was vice president for academic affairs at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York.
Columbia College in South Carolina to Admit Men to Residential Programs for the First Time
Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina has announced that for the first time in the school’s 166-year history, it will allow men to enroll as residential students. However, the college states that it hopes to offer two tracks, one for just women and one that will be co-educational.
Katie Conboy Selected to Be the Next President of St. Mary’s College in Indiana
Since 2013, Dr. Conboy has served as provost and senior vice president at what is now Simmons University in Boston. Earlier, she was a professor of English literature and later provost at Stonehill College in North Easton, Massachusetts. She will become president of St. Mary’s College on June 1.
Chancellor of Rutgers University-Camden Announces She Is Stepping Down on July 1
Phoebe A. Haddon became the chancellor of Rutgers University-Camden in July 2014. From 2009 to 2014, Haddon was dean of the Carey School of Law at the University of Maryland. Chancellor Haddon will remain at the university as a professor of law.
Lynn Perry Wooten Will Be the Ninth President of Simmons University in Boston
Most recently, Dr. Wooten has been serving as the David J. Nolan Dean and Professor of Management and Organizations at Cornell University’s Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. Prior to her position at Cornell, Dr. Wooten served on the faculty at the University of Michigan for nearly two decades.

Candice Storey Lee Is the First Woman Athletic Director at Vanderbilt University in Nashville
Dr. Lee has been serving as associate vice chancellor and deputy athletic director. She has been the department’s senior woman administrator for the athletics program since 2004. Dr. Lee was a four-year varsity letter winner in basketball and holds three degrees from Vanderbilt University.
Sarah Higgins Is the New Leader of the Birmingham, Alabama, Campus of Herzing University
Most recently, Higgins was vice president for marketing and enrollment at Western Colorado University in Gunnison. Earlier, she served as director of eternal relations and professional development at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.
Condoleezza Rice Appointed Director of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University
Professor Rice joined Stanford University in 1981, where she served as provost from 1993 to 1999. She was national security advisor to President George W. Bush before serving as U.S. Secretary of State from 2005 to 2009.
Suzanne Rivera to Be the First Woman to Lead Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota
Dr. Rivera currently serves as vice president for research and technology management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Earlier in her career, she held executive-level research posts at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the University of California, Irvine.
Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, Names Elizabeth Paul as its Next President
Since July 2016, Dr. Elizabeth Paul has served as the 16th president of Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Earlier she was the senior academic officer and a professor of psychology at Stetson University in Deland, Florida, for seven years.
Adrien Bennings Is the First Woman President of Kellogg Community College in Michigan
Dr. Bennings previously was vice president for finance and administration at Clovis Community College in New Mexico. Before that, she was regional director of the Small Business Development Center at Texas Tech University where she advanced economic development initiatives in a 16-county area in northwest Texas.
Debra Schwinn to Be the Ninth President of Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida
Dr. Schwinn has served as associate vice president for medical affairs, dean of the Carver College of Medicine, and professor of anesthesiology, pharmacology, and biochemistry at the University of Iowa. She earned a medical degree at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
Jeannie Sager Appointed to Lead the Women’s Philanthropy Institute
The Women’s Philanthropy Institute is housed in the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Sager has been serving as director of philanthropy at the Indiana University Health Foundation.

Monica Baloga has been serving as senior vice president for academic administration at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne. Dr. Bolga began her career at the Florida Institute of Technology in 1996 as an assistant professor of chemistry.

Dr. Elizabeth Loboa is a biomedical engineer. She is currently vice chancellor for strategic partnerships and dean and Ketchum Professor of the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri. Earlier, she taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.
Emily Barnes Chosen to Lead Cleary University in Howell, Michigan
Dr. Barnes has been serving as provost and chief academic officer at the university since July 2019. She is the first woman to serve as provost at the university. Earlier, she was dean of instruction and learning resources at the university.
Katrina VanderWoude Appointed President of Los Angeles Trade Technical College
In 2018, Dr. Vanderwoude was named the 12th permanent president of Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California, north of Oakland. Previously, she was vice president for academic affairs at Grossmont College in El Cajon, California. Earlier, she was vice provost at Rochester College in Michigan.
The Inaugural Director of the Nursing School at Grove City College in Pennsylvania
Dr. Janey Roach comes to Grove City College from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Schools of Nursing where she was the director of faculty affairs at Shadyside School of Nursing. She previously served on the faculty of UPMC’s St. Margaret Hospital School of Nursing.
Rutgers University-Camden Chancellor to Lead the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia
Phoebe A. Haddon became chancellor of Rutgers University-Camden in July 2014. From 2009 to 2014, she was dean of the Carey School of Law at the University of Maryland. Chancellor Haddon will continue to fulfill all her duties at Rutgers University-Camden while serving as board chair.
