Northwestern University Appoints Kathleen Hagerty as Its First Woman Provost
Dr. Hagerty has been serving as an interim provost since April. Earlier, she was interim dean of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern and senior associate dean of faculty and research. Dr. Hagerty, who holds the First Chicago Professorship in Finance, has been on the faculty at the university for more than 30 years.
The First Woman Editor in Chief of the Latin American Research Review
Carmen Martínez-Novo, professor at the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida, was named the new editor in chief of the Latin American Research Review. She joined the faculty at the University of Florida in 2019 after teaching at the University of Kentucky.
Dena McCaffrey Is the First Woman President of Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri
Dr. McCaffrey has served as dean of career and technical education at the college since 2013. Earlier, she was director of outreach and educational sites at the college. Before coming to Jefferson College, Dr. McCaffrey was associate director of MBA and graduate business programs at Saint Louis University.
Brenda Allen Is Back at the Helm of Lincoln University of Pennsylvania
On July 10, the board of trustees of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania voted not to renew the contract of the university’s president Brenda Allen. President Allen sued and the courts agreed that the vote not to renew her contract was illegal. Now the board has agreed to keep her as president.
Three State Universities Appoint Women to Provost Positions
Laurie Marie Lauzon Clabo was appointed interim provost at Wayne State University in Detroit. LaTonia Collins-Smith was appointed provost and vice president of academic affairs at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, and Ann McClellan was appointed interim provost at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire.
Colette Irwin-Knott to Lead Valparaiso University in Indiana
Irwin-Knott has been a member of the university’s board of trustees since 2009. She has spent her career in the field of public finance with HJ Umbaugh & Associates in Indianapolis retiring as a partner in 2014. She worked closely with educators throughout Indiana on hundreds of school and library projects involving the issuance of municipal bonds.
Creighton University in Omaha Announces the Appointment of Its Next Provost
Since 2014, Dr. Mardell Wilson, a registered dietitian and licensed dietitian nutritionist, has been dean of the Edward and Margaret Doisy College of Health Sciences at Saint Louis University. Earlier, she spent 17 years as a faculty member and administrator at Illinois State Unversity.
Carol A. Moore Is the New Leader of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina
In March of this year, Dr. Moore announced her decision to step down as president of Columbia College in South Carolina for family and health reasons. Dr. Moore also has served as interim president of Burlington College in Vermont and is the former president of Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont.
Terry Booth Is the New Leader of Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter, South Carolina
President Booth has been on the staff at the college for the past 30 years. Since 1999, she has been serving as vice president for business affairs where she was responsible for the college’s human resources, information systems, capital projects, physical plant, accounting and budgeting, purchasing, security, auxiliary and internal services.
Jill M. Baren is the New Provost at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
Dr. Baren comes to the University of the Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania where she has been serving as a professor of emergency medicine, pediatrics, and medical ethics at the Perelman School of Medicine. She was chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Penn from 2011 to 2017, where she was the first woman to hold the position.
Cheri Canon Is the New President of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments
Cheri L. Canon holds the Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. She is the second woman to serve as president of the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments, a nonprofit that aims to advance the art and science of radiology.
Anne Harris Named the Fourteenth President of Grinnell College in Iowa
Dr. Harris came to Grinnell College in 2019 as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. Earlier she was a professor of art history at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Dr. Harris joined the faculty at DePauw University in 1999. She is the second woman to lead Grinnell College.
The New President of Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, California
Since 2017, Tammeil Gilkerson has served as president of Laney College in Oakland. Earlier, Dr. Gilkerson served as vice president of academic and student affairs at Contra Costa College and as the first diversity, inclusion, and innovation officer for the Contra Costa Community College District.
Two Universities Announce the Appointment of New Provosts
April Summitt is the new provost at La Sierra University in Riverside, California. She joined the La Sierra University community in 2013 as the university’s first dean of general education. And Susan M. Collins was named provost at the University of Michigan. She is the Edward M. Gramlich Collegiate Professor of Public Policy and a professor of economics at the university.
Sophie Zdatny Named Chancellor of the Vermont State Colleges System
Zdatny is a practicing attorney who has been with the general counsel’s office of the state system since 2014. She has served as the system’s general counsel since January 2017. She previously practiced employment law with Allan Karlin & Associates in Morgantown, West Virginia.
M. Susie Whittington Chosen to Lead the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture
Dr. Whittington is professor of agriscience education in the department of agricultural communication, education, and Leadership at Ohio State University. Before joining the faculty at Ohio State in 2000, she taught at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Idaho.
Three Women Appointed to Provost Positions at Colleges and Universities
Karen An-Hwei Lee was named provost and professor of English at Wheaton College in Illinois. Katia Passerini was appointed provost and executive vice president at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and Mary Pedersen was appointed provost and executive vice president at Colorado State University.
Ashley Moerke Chosen to Lead the Society of Freshwater Science
Dr. Moerke serves as a professor in the School of Natural Resources and Environment at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Before joining the faculty at Lake Superior State University in 2004, Dr. Moerke was a scientist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Kathleen Jagger Is the New President of Newman University in Wichita, Kansas
Dr. Jagger most recently served as acting president at Thomas More University in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Earlier, she was a professor of microbiology and public health from 1996-2002 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and then was a professor of biology at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.
Melody Rose Selected to Lead the Nevada System of Higher Education
Dr. Rose most recently served as president of Marylhurst University in Oregon from 2014 to 2019. Earlier in her career, Dr. Rose served as chancellor of the Oregon University System and was vice provost for academic programs and instruction and dean of undergraduate studies at Portland State University in Oregon.
Nicole Pride Will Be the First Woman President of West Virginia State University
Dr. Pride had been serving as the vice provost for academic strategy and operations at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Earlier she served as associate vice chancellor for university relations and chief of staff for the chancellor of the university.
Kathleen Harring Is the Thirteenth President of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania
Dr. Harring as served as interim president since last summer. In 2017, she was named provost at the college. Dr. Harring has been on the faculty in the college’s psychology department since 1984.
Mary Croughan Is the New Provost at the University of California, Davis
Dr. Croughan has been serving as a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. From 1987 to 2010, Dr. Croughan served as a faculty member in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
Two Women Appointed to Lead Colleges of the City University of New York
Berenecea Johnson Eanes was appointed president of York College in Jamaica, New York. She has served as interim president since September 2019. And Christine Mangino was named president of Queensborough Community College in Bayside, New York. She has been serving as provost at Hostos Community College in The Bronx.
Sonja Feist-Price Appointed Provost at the University of Michigan-Flint
Professor Feist-Price currently serves as the vice president for institutional diversity and professor in the Department of Early Childhood, Special Education and Counselor Education in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. She will begin her new job on August 1.
Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, Selects its Fourteenth President
Dr. Alisa White is currently president of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. She previously served as vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at Tyler and Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Karen Whitney to Lead the University of Illinois at Springfield
Dr. Whitney is the president emerita of Clarion University in Pennsylvania and recently served as interim chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Before leading Clarion, Dr. Whitney was vice chancellor for student life at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis from 1999 through 2010.
Carol Puryear Appointed President of Tennessee College of Applied Technology Murfreesboro
Dr. Puryear joined the University of Tennessee System in 1994. In 2012, she was named associate vice chancellor for instruction and special projects for the colleges of applied technology. In 2017, Dr. Puryear was promoted to vice chancellor of economic and community development for the Tennessee Board of Regents.
Lori Varlotta Will Be the First Woman to Lead California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks
Dr. Varlotta comes to Cal Lutheran having served as president of Hiram College in Ohio since 2014. Earlier, she spent 11 years at Sacramento State University, ultimately serving as senior vice president of planning, enrollment management, and student affairs.
The First Woman to Lead the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City
The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City has selected Shuly Rubin Schwartz to be its eighth chancellor. When she takes office on July 1, she will be the first woman to lead the seminary in its 134-year history. She has been serving as provost at the seminary.
Lori Kletzer Appointed Provost at the University of California, Santa Cruz
Dr. Kletzer initially joined the faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1992. From 2010 to July 2017, Dr. Kletzer was provost and dean of faculty at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
Ohio State University Appoints Kristina Johnson as Its Next President
Dr. Johnson has been serving as chancellor of the State University of New York System since 2017. Earlier in her career, Dr. Johnson served as under secretary of energy at the U.S. Department of Energy and held academic leadership positions at Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Laura Walker Named the Eleventh President of Bennington College in Vermont
Walker served as president and CEO of New York Public Radio for 23 years. In the academic world, Walker currently serves on The President’s Council at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and Yale School of Management’s Center for Customer Insights.

Anne Alexander will serve as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Wyoming. Saundra F. DeLauder was named provost and vice president of academic affairs at Delaware State University and Molly Smith will be the inaugural provost at Thomas More University in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
Purchase College in New York Announces Its Next President
The State University of New York Board of Trustees announced today that Dr. Milagros Peña will become the sixth president of Purchase College. Since 2015, Dr. Peña has been serving as dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of California, Riverside.
