Rhea Law Selected to Lead the University of South Florida
Law is the former chief executive officer and chair of the board of Fowler White Boggs, a Florida law firm. She led the merger of that firm with a national firm, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney in 2014. President Law was one of the founding members of the USF board of trustees, where she spent five years as vice chair and four years as the first and only female chair.
Mills College’s Proposed Merger With Northeastern University Hits a Roadblock
This past June, Northeastern University in Boston reached an agreement to acquire Mills College, a liberal arts educational institution for women in Oakland, California. The Save Mills College Coalition, a group of students, faculty, alumnae, and other friends of the college contends that the college has the resources to continue operations without the merger. A California judge has now blocked the merger until a hearing can be held.
Elizabeth Chilton Named Chancellor of the Pullman Campus of Washington State University
Dr. Chilton became provost and executive vice president at Washington State University on August 1, 2000. From 2017 to 2020, she served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Binghamton University, a campus of the State University of New York System. Earlier, Dr. Chilton spent 16 years at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
The Next President of Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee
Since 2017, Dr. Orinthia T. Montague has been president of Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, New York. She previously served as vice president of student affairs and chief diversity officer, and dean of students, at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, and as dean of students at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Charlotte Morris Appointed the Ninth President of Tuskegee University in Alabama
For over three decades, Dr. Morris has served in several roles at Tuskegee University including chief of staff to the president and secretary to the board of trustees. Most recently, Dr. Morris served as the director of the university’s Title III program.
Sheila Edwards Lange Chosen to Be the Next Chancellor of the University of Washington-Tacoma
Dr. Edwards Lange has been serving as president of Seattle Central College. She was the vice president for minority affairs and diversity for the University of Washington from 2007 to 2015. Dr. Edwards Lange is scheduled to become chancellor at the University of Washington-Tacoma on September 16.
The College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California, Names Martha Garcia as Its Next President
Dr. Garcia has been serving as the Superintendent/President of Imperial Valley College in Imperial, California. She has been employed in the California Community College System since 1999. She is expected to become president of the College of the Desert on August 20.
La Jerne Terry Cornish to Lead Ithaca College for the 2021-22 Academic Year
Dr. Cornish has been serving as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Ithaca College since 2018. Earlier, she was associate provost for undergraduate studies at Goucher College in Baltimore. She joined the faculty at Goucher in 1998 as an instructor of English.
Daphne Rudicell Robinson Will Be the Last President of Judson College in Alabama
Daphne Rudicell Robinson is the 24th president of Judson College in Marion, Alabama. When she took office on July 19, she became the first woman to lead the women’s college. Her tenure will be short-lived. The college plans to close its doors on July 31.
Daisy Cocco De Filippis Appointed President of Hostos Community College in New York
Dr. Cocco De Filippis returned to Hostos Community College in 2020 as interim president after a 12-year tenure as president of Naugatuck Valley Community College in Connecticut. From 2002 to 2008, she served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Hostos Community College.
Two Women Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Provost Positions
Michelle Piskulich was named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Molloy Collge in Rockville Center, New York, and Karyn Scissum Gunn was appointed provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at California State University, Long Beach.
Mary Gutierrez Named Chancellor of the Taos Campus of the University of New Mexico
Dr. Gutierrez has been serving as vice president of instruction at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California. She also was an instructor in educational leadership at San Francisco State University. Earlier, Dr. Gitierrez was dean of language arts and as acting president at Skyline College in San Bruno, California, and associate dean at Cascadia College in Bothel, Washington.
Susan Margulies to Head the National Science Foundation’s Directorate of Engineering
Dr. Margulies, who teaches at Emory University and Georgia Tech, will be the first biomedical engineer to head the directorate, which supports fundamental research, enhances the nation’s innovation through a range of initiatives, and is a driving force behind the training and development of the United States’ engineering workforce.
LaTonia Collins Smith Is the New Leader of Harris-Stowe State University in St Louis
Dr. Collins Smith is serving as interim president. She had been serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Collins Smith began her career in higher education at Harris-Stowe State University in 2010 as a project coordinator in the Office of Counseling Services.
Kristin Esterberg Appointed Chancellor of the University of Washington-Bothell
Dr. Esterberg has been serving as president of the State University of New York at Potsdam. Prior to her term as SUNY Potsdam president, which began in 2014, Dr. Esterberg served as provost and academic vice president at Salem State University in Massachusetts and as deputy provost at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She will take on her new duties on October 1.
The Next Provost at the University of Texas at Austin
Since 2014, Sharon Wood has been serving as dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas. She joined the faculty at the university in 1994. Professor Wood is internationally recognized for her research on the earthquake response of reinforced concrete structures.
Patty Pfeiffer to Lead Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, North Carolina
Dr. Pfeiffer has been serving as the college’s vice president for academic and student services. She has been employed at the college since November 1994 when she joined the faculty as a nursing instructor. Dr. Pfeiffer has also served as nursing department chair, Allied Health and Public Services Division dean, chief of staff, and vice president of institutional effectiveness and innovation.
Nikole Hannah-Jones Will Teach at Howard University Instead of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Professor Hannah-Jones a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who has been covering racial injustice for The New York Times Magazine. She is the creator of the landmark 1619 Project which commemorates the 400th anniversary of the beginning of slavery in what would become the United States by examining slavery’s modern legacy.
University of Pennsylvania President Amy Gutmann Named U.S. Ambassador to Germany
Dr. Gutmann has served as president of the University of Pennsylvania since 2004. Her contract as president of the University of Pennsylvania runs through June 2022. She said she will remain at her post until confirmed by the Senate.
Teresa MacCartney Appointed Acting Chancellor of the University System of Georgia
Since 2019, MacCartney has served as executive vice chancellor for administration. In this role, she managed the university system’s day-to-day management of departments that include cybersecurity, leadership and institutional development, economic development, legal affairs, organizational effectiveness, human resources, real estate and facilities, internal audits, and safety and security.
Muriel B. Mickles is the New Leader of Danville Community College in Virginia
Dr. Mickles had been serving as vice president of academics, students, and workforce development at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg. She will serve as interim president of Danville Community College while a search for a permanent president is conducted.
Syracuse University in New York Has Selected Gretchen Ritter as Its Next Provost
Since 2019, Dr. Ritter has been serving as executive dean and vice provost for the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio State University. In 2013, Dr. Ritter was appointed the 21st dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She was the first woman to hold the position.
Melissa Nobles Appointed Chancellor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The provost and chancellor are the Institute’s two most senior academic appointments; both report to the president of MIT. The chancellor oversees matters including admissions, teaching and learning, residential life, student support, and efforts to prevent sexual harassment and misconduct. Dr. Nobles has been serving as dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at MIT.
Summer Johnson McGee Appointed President of Salem Academy and College in North Carolina
Dr. McGee is the founding and current dean of the School of Health Sciences at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut. Before joining the University of New Haven, Dr. McGee served on the faculty of Loyola University Chicago, the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and Albany Medical College.
Northeastern University Throws a Lifeline to Mills College
In March 2021, Mills College, a liberal arts educational institution for women in Oakland, California, that was founded in 1853, announced plans to end degree programs and transition to an academic institute. Now Northeastern University in Boston has made a proposal to bring Mills College into its global community.
Prescott College in Arizona Names Barbara Morris as Its New President
Barbara Morris currently serves as associate vice provost and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs for the State University System of New York. Prior to her current role at SUNY, Dr. Morris served as president of SUNY Oneonta. Earlier, she spent 15 years on the faculty at the University of Redlands in California.
Kimberly Ballard-Washington Is the New President of Savannah State University in Georgia
Kimberly Ballard-Washington has served as interim president since July 2019. Earlier, she was associate vice chancellor for legal affairs for the University System of Georgia and is the former associate director of legal affairs for the flagship campus of the University of Georgia in Athens.

Dana Nichols Selected to Lead Georgia Highlands College
Dr. Nichols has served as provost and chief academic officer at the college since 2018. Earlier, she was vice president for academic affairs at Chattanooga State Community College and was an associate professor of both English and Spanish at Gainesville State College, which is now a campus of the University of North Georgia.
Danielle Wilken Appointed President of the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut
The University of Bridgeport was recently acquired by Goodwin University in East Hartford, Connecticut. The Bridgeport campus will retain its name and will have independent leadership. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Wilken has been serving as provost and dean of faculty at Goodwin University.
Professor Anna Harvey to Lead the Social Science Research Council
Professor Harvey is a professor of politics at New York University. She also serves as the founding director of the Public Safety Lab a community-engaged research initiative that draws on the dual lenses of social science and data science to provide insight into mass incarceration and recommendations for improvement of the criminal justice system.
Linda Thompson Will Be the Twenty-First President of Westfield State University in Massachusetts
Dr. Thompson has served as dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Boston since 2017 and previously held a similar position at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Earlier, she served as provost and vice-chancellor at North Carolina A&T State University and dean of nursing at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.
