Riverside City College in California Appoints FeRita Carter as Interim President
Dr. Carter has been serving as vice president of student services at the college. Prior to joining the staff at Riverside City College, Dr. Carter was the dean of the School of Business and Technology and a full-time political science faculty member at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Megan Walsh Will Be the Next Leader of the University of Maine at Machias
Dr. Walsh joined the faculty at St. Bonaventure University as an assistant professor of English in 2011. She was promoted to associate professor in 2016, followed by her promotion to full professor in 2018. She is the director of the honors program, former chair of the department of English, and former acting dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.
Rosie Rimando-Chareunsap Appointed Interim Chancellor of the Seattle Colleges
Dr. Rimando-Chareunsap has been with Seattle Colleges for 22 years. She started as a student success specialist in the TRiO Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound programs. She later served as vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion for the district. Dr. Rimando-Chareunsap has been president of South Seattle College since 2018.
Wendi Williams Is the New Provost at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California
Dr. Williams is the former dean of the School of Education at Mills College in Oakland, California. Earlier, she was the associate dean of academic affairs at the Bank Street College, Graduate School of Education in New York City. Prior to these roles, she provided academic leadership as program coordinator and department chair for counseling and school psychology at Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York.
Randenka Maric Appointed President of the University of Connecticut
Dr. Maric has served as interim president of the University of Connecticut since February 1. Earlier, she served as vice president for research from 2017 to 2022. Dr. Maric is the second woman to serve as president of the university.
Tonya Smith-Jackson Named Provost at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University
Dr. Smith-Jackson has worked for North Carolina A&T since 2013. She originally joined A&T as a professor and chair of the department of industrial and systems engineering and founder/director of the Human Factors Analytics Laboratory. She was later named senior vice provost for academic affairs.
Sylvia Trent-Adams Appointed President of the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth
Before joining the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth in 2020, Dr. Trent-Adams was Deputy Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps., then she was named Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health. Early in her career, She was a nurse officer in the U.S. Army and a research nurse at the University of Maryland.
Arizona State University’s Ariane Middel Is the New President of the International Association for Urban Climate
Dr. Middel is an assistant professor in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering and the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence at Arizona State. She joined the faculty in 2018. Previously, Dr. Middel was an assistant professor in the department of geography and urban studies at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Neslihan Alp Is the New Provost at the Pennsylvania College of Technology
For nearly 30 years, Dr. Alp has paired an engineering background with a passion for higher education, advancing from instructor to department head to associate dean at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga before serving the past four years as dean of the College of Technology at Indiana State University.
Stacy Volnick Selected to Lead Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton
Volnick became a member of the university’s administrative staff in 1991, advancing steadily through the ranks. In 2013, she became vice president for administrative affairs and chief administrative officer, and more recently, she was promoted to chief operating officer.
Deborah Prentice Will Be the First American to Lead University of Cambridge in England
Deborah Prentice, provost and the Alexander Stewart 1886 Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs at Princeton University in New Jersey, has been nominated to be the next vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge in England.
The University of Montevallo in Alabama Appoints Courtney Bentley as Provost
Dr. Bentley has been serving as interim provost since January. In 2018, she was appointed dean of the College of Education at the university. She had been serving as associate dean of programs for the School of Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Amy Shelton Selected to Lead the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore
The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, founded in 1979 by a Johns Hopkins psychology professor, is a world leader in gifted education. The center identifies top pre-college learners in grades K through 12 and provides challenging summer residential programs, distance education, international programs, and family academic programs. Professor Shelton joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University in 2002.
Ellen Gawait Is the First Woman Dean of Natural and Environmental Sciences at Duquesne University
A faculty member at Duquesne since 2003, Dr. Gawalt is a Hillman Distinguished Professor and formerly served as chair of the school’s chemistry and biochemistry departments. She has authored or co-authored more than 100 scientific papers and presentations.
Sarah Willie-LeBreton Will Be the Next President of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts
Dr. Willie-LeBreton currently serves as provost and dean of the faculty at Swarthmore College, where she has taught since 1997. Earlier, she served on the faculty at Colby College in Maine and Bard College in New York. She will become president of Smith College on July 1, 2023.
Scheri Fultineer Will Be the Next Leader of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University
Scheri Fultineer recently served as dean of the Division of Architecture and Design at the Rhode Island School of Design. She also held the roles of interim associate provost of research and was a department head. Earlier, she taught for more than a decade at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Another One Bites the Dust: Notre Dame of Maryland University to Transition to Co-Education
Notre Dame of Maryland University has announced that it will transition to a fully co-educational institution for the fall of 2023. Founded in 1895 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the college made its first inroads into co-education by establishing a weekend college for both men and women. The university offers a wide range of graduate programs, which are open to men.

In the rankings of the top 50 best liberal arts colleges in the nation, Wellesley College in Massachusetts was ranked fifth overall. Only Williams College and Amherst College, both in Massachusetts, Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, and Pomona College in California ranked higher.

Forbes magazine and the market research company Statista have compiled their latest rankings of America’s Best Employers for Women. Loyola University of Chicago was rated the best educational institution in the United States for women to work. It ranked eighth overall on the Forbes list. Southern New Hampshire University and the University of South Florida ranked second and third, respectively.
Julie Fiez and Lori Holt Are the New Leaders of the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition in Pittsburgh
The Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition is a collaboration of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. The center provides students and faculty at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh to connect formally and informally in graduate training, undergraduate research opportunities, and collaboration clusters, which encourage joint publications and grant submissions.
A Trio of Women Who Have Been Selected to Serve as Provosts
Yolanda Page is the new provost and vice president of academic affairs at Savannah State University in Georgia. Mablene Krueger was appointed interim provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Dillard University in New Orleans and Antoinette A. Coleman is the new provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York.
Sara Quay Is the New Provost at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts
For the past 25 years, Dr. Quay has worked at Endicott, first as assistant dean of Arts & Sciences, then as dean of the School of Education and director of the Endicott Scholars program. In 2021, she was named the inaugural vice provost where she had oversight of the Office of International Education, the Office of Career & Internship, Halle Library, the registrar, and Endicott’s assessment initiatives.
Texas A&M University College of Dentistry Has Selected Lily Garcia as Its New Dean
Dr. Garcia currently serves as dean and professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine. Prior to UNLV, she served as associate dean for education at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, as well as other leadership roles – division head and department chair at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and department chair at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Gloria Oikelome Will Be the Next Provost at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania
Most recently, Dr. Oikelome served as vice president of academic affairs at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. Earlier, she held academic leadership roles at Reading Area Community College and Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and the University of York (Hull York Medical School) in England. She will begin her new duties on October 22.
Three Women Who Are Serving as University Presidents Have Announced They Will Retire in 2023
Pamela R. Fox, president of Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia, Bonita Jacobs, president of the University of North Georgia, and Laura M. Casamento, president of Utica University in New York, have all announced that they will step down from their positions at the end of the current academic year.
Lara Moore Will Share the Leadership of Eastern Oregon University
Moore joined the staff at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande in 2003 as executive assistant to the vice president for business, finance & facilities. In 2009, she was appointed director of business affairs. In 2014, Moore became vice president of finance and administration. She will now be interim co-president with the former chair of the university’s board of trustees.
Deborah Thomas Appointed the Chief Academic Officer at Texas A&M University-Galveston
Dr. Thomas joined the university as an assistant professor in 2004. She is now a full professor of oceanography. Professor Thomas’ research applies the chemical composition of marine sediments toward the reconstruction of past climate, with a particular interest in the climate dynamics of globally warm periods of time in Earth’s history.
Nicole Esposito Wins Her Job Back as Leader of Manchester Community College in Connecticut
Nicole Esposito was removed from her post as leader of Manchester Community College in August 2021, just a little more than a year after taking office. She promptly filed a lawsuit claiming gender discrimination and harassment. The case was recently settled in her favor.
Jennifer Hinton Has Been Selected to Lead the American Therapeutic Recreation Association
Jennifer Hinton is a professor and program director of the recreational therapy program at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. She will serve one year as president-elect, followed by one year as president and one year as past-president.
Melva K. Williams Is the New President of Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas
Prior to coming to Huston-Tillotson University, Dr. Williams held numerous positions within the Southern University System in Louisiana including, executive associate to the chancellor, assistant vice chancellor and vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management at Southern University-Shreveport, vice chancellor at Southern University-New Orleans, and system chief of staff.
Minnie Naylor to Lead the Chukchi Campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Kotzebue
The Chukchi Campus, part of UAF’s College of Rural and Community Development, is a two-year public institution. The campus serves the 11 communities within the Bering Strait region, an area of more than 36,000 square miles.
Three Women Faculty Members Who Have Been Selected to Lead National Associations
Xiuli Liu, of the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected president of the Chinese American Pathologists Association. Octavia Peck Palmer, an associate professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, was named president-elect of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry and Amanda Bettencourt, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania is the new president of the American Association of Critical Nurses.
Lynda Goldstein Is the New Chancellor of the Wilkes-Barre Campus of Pennsylvania State University
Dr. Goldstein, who is also an associate professor of English and women’s studies, has served as interim chancellor at the campus since March. She has simultaneously held the role of the associate chief academic officer since 2018. Dr. Goldstein has served in a variety of roles at Penn State Wilkes-Barre since she was hired as an instructor in the English department in 1991.
Angela McLean Is the New Leader of Bitterroot College in Hamilton, Montana
Dr. McLean had been serving as the director of American Indian/Minority Achievement and K-12 Partnerships in the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education in Helena. She is the former chair of the Montana Board of Regents and the former lieutenant governor of the State of Montana.
Donna M. Carroll Selected to Lead North Central College in Naperville, Illinois
Dr. Carroll recently completed a 27-year presidency at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. She is expected to lead North Central College for the coming academic year while a search for a permanent president is conducted.
