The Growing List of New Women Deans

Bonnie Thornton Dill, chair of the women’s studies department at the University of Maryland, was named dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at the university. When she begins her new duties on August 1, she will become the first woman to hold the post.

Professor Dill has taught at the University of Maryland for two decades and has been instrumental in building one of the strongest women’s studies programs in the nation. She is the founding director of the university’s Consortium on Race, Gender, and Ethnicity. She is the author of three books including her latest work, Emerging Intersections: Race, Class, and Gender in Theory, Policy and Practice.

Professor Dill is a graduate of the University of Rochester. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from New York University.

Susan Calovini was named vice president for academic and student affairs and dean of the college at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Evansville in Indiana.

Dr. Calovini is a graduate of Ohio University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English from Ohio State University.

Barbara Wells, professor of sociology and chair of the social sciences division at Maryville College in Tennessee, was named interim vice president and dean of the college. Professor Wells has taught at Maryville College since 1998.

Dr. Wells is a graduate of Calvin College. She earned master’s and doctoral degrees at Michigan State University.
